There's a national movement underway to address some pretty sobering data on reading proficiency. About half of third graders read at grade level. One part of the solution is retraining teachers on the science behind how kids learn to read. Here's what it looks like in Utah

It started with a visceral "ugh" reaction to more teacher training. It ended with a scientific approach to teaching kids how to read. buff.ly/3FWdF4I

A decision on the Little Cottonwood Canyon transportation plan was supposed to come by the end of the ski season. But @UtahDOT says a record number of public comments has them rethinking their options. #UDOT #LittleCottonwood #LittleCottonwoodCanyon buff.ly/3r6ePEt

Definitely in agreement here
When Courtney submits a records request, you KNOW it’s for a damn good reason and a compelling public interest. The state owes her the records. The state should give her the records. #givecourtneytherecords

Plus a note on rising interest rates: they are not likely to help much here A huge number of ppl refinanced to lock in super low rates. So to move now would likely mean a much higher monthly payment, which @EskicDejan says there is little appetite for. That'll keep supply limited

It looks like the incoming teacher pool in Utah is strong…for now. Thanks to some amazing help from @maliahite, we were able to crunch some numbers on the 2020-21 school year and found there were MORE students enrolled in teacher prep programs than the year before. @KUER

Of course, this does not paint a complete picture of what’s happening to the overall interest in becoming a teacher. It’s a glimpse, but a surprising one. The data we looked at doesn’t include the current school year. We also don’t yet have the completion rate for 2020-21

On the other hand, here is a great, but disheartening thread on what's happening in Nevada re: teacher retention. So the news isn't all good. This year's data in Utah will be very interesting to watch x.com/DataInsightPart/status…

1/? .@matt_barnum, we’re big fans of your work! Your last report referenced a teacher attrition report from the Clark County School District in Las Vegas We wanted to share with you some more context around that number and what’s happening now with CCSD’s teacher workforce 🧵

New report out from @KemGardnerInst finds rents in SL County went up over 10% in 2021, the second highest yearly increase in 20 years. The vacancy rate is also below 2%, which is the lowest rate on record and considered "full capacity"

Full report here: gardner.utah.edu/wp-content/… It does say the current construction boom will likely bring the vacancy rate up over the next few years, which could help some with rising rents. But the "countywide rental market will continue to favor landlords"
