This is how massively optimized the scrolling skies rasterizer is in the #Retroquad engine now. It's almost as fast as a flat color, despite having two dome projections with perspective correction, HD textures, texture frame interpolation, color blending and horizon fading.

A full environmental reference for comparison. The rasterization of rigid surfaces and liquid surfaces have more impact on performance.

South of Midnight is a beautiful game. It's a shame its studio was closed. I fear that the impact of such closures will lead to a "safer" design trend without minority lead characters.

Character design isn't the actual issue for such games, the bloated budget is. The market for such games does exist, it's just smaller than the market for titles such as GTA. Shoving 100 million dollars into the product won't change that.

Niche games are a treasure, and minority characters are, by definition, a niche market segment. Niche markets can grow, but they do so slowly. Slow and steady wins the race, this must be respected. Instead, Microsoft and Sony are crashing and burning those projects at max speed

With 2 layers, the brain only measures the distance between front & back. But with 3 layers, the brain would measure between front & back, front & middle, and middle & back, and this triangulation would likely give an impression of volume.

The thing about wanting to commit suicide is that it's not worth it to fail and end up with a bunch of irreversible health issues to regret. And doing it in a foolproof way is a decision that can be done only once. So we're forced to shut up and swallow this bullshit of a life.

Why did this happen? It turns out that the box’s firmware had hardcoded the assumption that the struct field holding the number of orders on the orderbook level could be represented using 16 bits. Because surely, there couldn’t be more than 65,535 orders at a single level?

I think for a game design paradigm to be considered artistic, it has to go against the logical grain of economic profit to some extent, otherwise its impossible to see artistic intention behind it
