Our case study with Datapacket is now published. Here you can read some interesting details on the Palworld chaos-weeks of early 2024, that time we got hit (and survived) a 2Tbit/s DDoS attack and other interesting bits of how we operate our global game hosting platform.
"Even a single millisecond matters in competitive gaming. Players can feel it. With DataPacket, we know the routing is optimized and any bad ping issues get solved." —Svante Boberg, CTO at DatHost We make sure that players worldwide in competitive titles can focus solely on the game while we handle the infrastructure behind it. During Tuesday 49.84% of all traffic hitting Googles edge was IPv6. Any week now IPv4 will be the second most used protocol to access Google services.

I see 1000250 IPv4 prefixes. This is 368 more prefixes than 6 hours ago and 1879 more than a week ago. 61.78% of prefixes are /24.

Blown away of how useful eBPF is for ops. I had a simple bash script that checks interface counters and calculates incoming PPS to detect DDoS on my servers. But got a lot of false positives when the server was doing updates and downloading stuff in 10Gbit.

I switched to instead only measure incoming UDP and ICMP packets by having my bash script poll /proc/net/snmp. But this was only counting packets actually allowed, traffic blocked by my firewall is not counted here so a lot of DDoS failed to be detected.

I now turned to eBPF where I made a small XDP program that checks every incoming packet, if its IPPROTO_UDP/ICMP then I increase a counter in a map array. This array can be mounted to userspace where my bash script reads it. Simple and very high performant!
