There is no product I have ever more hated than my @HP printer. Unable to print from Windows 11 even after installing their software. "Printer requires attention" even though it prints just fine from a Windows 10 machine on the same network. YOU PEOPLE HAD ONE JOB AND YOU FAILED!

Horizontal slicing is how most software teams work. The most difficult/challenging software skill is vertical slicing. Those who master it attain software superpowers.

Oh @HP, I hate you with a passion. At least 50% of the time I need to use your pathetic printer, it doesn't connect. You had one job and you screwed it up. Never again.

Impostor syndrome: “I don't know what I'm doing. It's only a matter of time until everyone finds out." Growth mindset: "I don't know what I'm doing yet. It's only a matter of time until I figure it out." The highest form of self-confidence is believing in your ability to learn.

Does your product team start with the stuff that's clear, familiar and easy to get started with? Or the stuff that's vague, uncertain and hard to get started with? "Easy choice > hard life. Hard choice > easy life."

Committing to a year’s worth of roadmap is like saying “I’m not going to learn anything new that could change my mind” and that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

"When will it be done" is a question that you can answer only if you know what "it" is. If you learn as you work, and the things you learn change what "it" is, then that number is a moving target, impossible to predict with accuracy.

Great thread! I'm gonna have to try this both as a feedback giver and receiver.
Here's my most valuable and worst-kept secret for writers and makers. I use this method when giving feedback* to other writers and makers. I'm surprised by how many people are surprised by it. *though only for people who've *asked* for feedback.

Oh, this thread is so lovely... learning about random but fascinating things is one of the greatest pleasures. And doesn't impact my weight, so bonus points.

European civilization is built on ham and cheese, which allowed protein to be stored throughout the icy winters. Without this, urban societies in most of central Europe would simply not have been possible. This is also why we have hardback books. Here's why. 1/

This. As a long-time consultant, I have come to learn that much of my success stems from usually being the only one with bandwidth to do exactly that. As an outsider you're initially exempt from the relentless WIP overload. Experience, tools--sure, but also time to think & focus.

Funny, but/and oh so true...
Just realized that when I transition a project to a new person coming in to backfill me, I feel like a time traveler warning my future self about avoiding some horrible mistake. Past me (or the new person in this case) never has enough context to understand the dire warnings.

I hope the people hiring these companies realize they're not getting much value for their consulting $$ - we all know that *nobody*, not even expensive consultants, can actually be productive for 90-100 hours/week. Creating high-level plans and slide decks doesn't count.
