🚨 New pre-print 🚨 Will AI-generated art kill the art profession? There's much speculation about this. But not much experimental evidence. So we designed an expertiment to compare the use of generative AI (text-to-image models) by 50 artists vs laypeople. We had two tasks: 1. Copying task: Designing a prompt for Stable Diffusion to copy a given image; 2. Creative task: Designing a prompt to get as far as possible from a given image; We even asked a #GPT4o agent to perform the same task. In a nutshell: - The expertise of artists allows them to use generative AI more effectively than lay persons. - AI is actually pretty good at using itself to generate art, but the best artists are still human! arxiv.org/abs/2501.12374

Thanks to early AI regulation in Europe, we might get used to relying primarily on open AI models, as many proprietary ones are not being released in the region due to these regulations. This trend in AI could lead to some unexpected and interesting effects.
