Governments rely on unpaid carers to keep health & social care functioning. If an employer demanded the same hours, there’d be questions about safety, exploitation & duty of care. Why has there never been a major legal or human rights challenge over the harm done to unpaid carers

Scotland sings “No Scotland, No Party”, but unpaid carers aren’t celebrating anything today. #CarersWeek ends with no progress, not even a goal to celebrate, no day off on Monday for us - Hard to feel national pride when our reality is invisible #CarersWeek2026

As #CarersWeek talks about “carer‑friendly communities”, but my son’s needs are ignored. He can’t cope in shared accommodation - it would be a mini‑institution for him. He needs his own tenancy and tailored support. Independent living is his right, not a luxury.#CarersWeek2026

As #CarersWeek ends - Independent living is a human right. My son is entitled to his own tenancy and the support he needs - not forced into unsuitable shared housing because the local authority won’t fund his assessed needs. #CarersWeek2026

#CarersWeek is ending. Our crisis isn’t. My son’s right to independent living is ignored. My right to health and safe housing is ignored. This is not a “carer‑friendly community”. It’s a human rights failure. #CarersWeek2026

It's very hard to get reasonable adjustments out of unreasonable ppl and organisations.

Carers Week often focuses on self-care, but many carers are exhausted because the support they need simply isn't available. Sometimes the answer isn't a bubble bath. It's respite. It's social care. It's Continuing Healthcare. It's knowing your loved one is safe when you finally get a chance to rest. What's one thing that would genuinely make your caring role easier? #CarersWeek #UnpaidCarers #FamilyCarers #CarerSupport #SocialCare #ContinuingHealthcare

How can Scotland claim to uphold human rights when disabled adults are denied independent living and ageing carers are left in unsafe housing? This is not “support”. It’s a breach of basic rights throughout #CarersWeek2026 @scotgov @scotgovhealth x.com/mccafferty2/status/206…

Please don't turn your back on my plight @scotgov this is how the system works for ageing carers re housing while in caring roles #CarersWeek2026 #CarersWeek @S_A_Somerville @AConstance23 x.com/mccafferty2/status/206…

Suddenly one person is expected to be available every hour of every day To be responsible day & night To sacrifice sleep, income, career opportunities, relationships and often their own health. Society acts as though this is simply part of family life 🪡

What about legal protections for those unpaid carers working 60, 90, 120 hrs a week? They not count? Turn a blind eye to the exploitation? Lack of sleep, lack of day off ever, lack of being able to attend own medical appointments, lack of sick day, illegal in any other context

I see theres been a surge of disabled young people being denied independant living and being inappropriately forced into care homes, often taking advantage of a brief spell in hospital to withdraw support - or being told the only way they can leave hospital is to go into a unit

Carer orgs promote “carer‑friendly communities”,but unpaid carers are posting the reality of role, unsafe housing, failing health, no independent living pathways, no respite, living in hospitals 24/7 with not even a bed - MSPs need to hear the reality, not the PR. #CarersWeek2026

Looks about like what I slept on at Crumlin for 2 1/2 months. I think it's the same in both children's and adult hospitals - the healthcare system here is outdated and definitely not accommodating for family carers. Time they catch up to 2026. #CarersWeek2026
#CarersWeek @BeforeWeDie My bed for the last 4.5 weeks, who knows how long more. This is the reality for carers who have children with ID & complex medical needs. There are no facilities for us in adult hospitals. What do people thinks comes of our children when they reach 18?😓

One person cannot safely work 168 hours a week No employer would be allowed to demand it No union would tolerate it No health and safety professional would defend it No court would consider it reasonable Everyone understands that Until the worker is called an unpaid carer🪡

Refusing my son his own tenancy breaches his right to independent living. Forcing me, an ageing carer with disabilities, to keep going breaches mine. Human rights don’t disappear because a council budget is tight #HiddenReality #CarersWeek #CarersWeek2026
