More details on the near loss of a Rochester NY firefighter during a daring river rescue Sunday. "The firefighter from engine 2 struggled to keep his head above water for 5-7 minutes. They attempted to use an inflatable boat to try to ferry across the river on the west side of the island. It sounds like the river was flowing at very dangerous levels. The boat flipped, dumping all the equipment and firefighters into the river. The firefighter who almost drowned had a rope get hung up on his PFD. The pressure of the water was pulling him under once the rope was tight. The fireman who rescued him is one of the most physically fit and strong guys on the job. He was so exhausted they sent him home for the remainder of the shift."

A Coast Guard helicopter from Detroit had to fly in to rescue a man from an island in the Genesee River in downtown Rochester Sunday, even though a New York Army National Guard helicopter aviation unit at the Rochester airport has the same capabilities. Red tape often keeps them from responding to local emergencies. The State Police helicopter based in Rochester with similar capabilities was not available Sunday because of a routine inspection.

A Rochester firefighter came close to drowning Sunday in the Genesee River in an attempt to rescue someone who had survived a trip over the Upper Falls and was stranded on the island below the falls. The firefighter, who'd become entangled in a rope in the water, was saved by another firefighter who leapt to his rescue and freed him from the rope. The individual on the island was subsequently rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter and rescue swimmer from Detroit.
