There's lots of guidance for leaders on "listening with empathy". This research-based article says much of it (based on the idea of "walking in others shoes") is problematic. "Walking in shoes" gives us a clear picture of how we would feel if we were the other person but not how they actually feel. Researchers call this "perspective-taking". Instead, we should stop treating empathy as a solo sport & engage in "perspective-getting" - empathising collaboratively. Every conversation is a joint project, done best when we make space to learn from one another: hbr.org/2024/04/how-to-becom…. By @zakijam

How should we approach our role as leaders? By emphasising our competence, strength & experience? Or by establishing trust through warmth and understanding? The authors of this classic article say we need to do both but we should start with building trust. Multiple studies in the ten years since this article have backed up the importance of relationships and connections as the foundations for effective leadership. hbr.org/2013/07/connect-then… Graphic: @tnvora

If you suspect a stroke in a child, please call ASAP. It’s a big decision to do or not do a CT and CTA (don’t forget the CTA!), so let’s make the decision together.
