Been off eX-twitter for a week or more and no desire to come back, except to say that I won't be here, not for a while at least.

Funeral today.
Not always the best dad in the world - fair to say work came before family - my father did some interesting things. And as he said in the days before he died, he had "lived a life". Thanks to the @guardian for running this: theguardian.com/theguardian/…

Even with vaccines hoarding, travel bans & discrimination, Africa raised to the challenge. Maybe the world should learn how African scientists and public health officials worked together with governments to respond to the pandemic? Important lessons to learn from Africa!

There's nothing remotely superior/developed about trying to 'tech' our way out of the pandemic with vaccines, therapeutics & testing while ignoring basic public health measures. Masks, ventilation, good contact tracing, support with isolation all important. Every layer matters.🧵

Lastly & most importantly. Until we ensure global equitable access to all tools-Data, Diagnostics,Sequencing,Drugs,O2,PPE,Health Systems,Vaccines we will not bring acute phase of the pandemic to an end & we all remain at risk. We can make that happen in 2022. It is our choice.

🧵 'What's the alternative?!'/'What's your alternative?!' This question came up several times in the replies to this 🧵 so I'll take it in good faith and answer it. I'll be very clear and explicit so that you won't have to presume what I really mean or want, I'll tell you. 1/24
This thread by @BallouxFrancois troubles me for several reasons, first and foremost because he is now advising our health secretary Sajid Javid. The central message of his 🧵is that COVID is inevitable, we're all going to get it, let's just get on with life. 1/23

8/ New variants are a reminder if we needed it that the pandemic is far from over, inequity is what will extend the pandemic. We do need to do inclusive public health better including urgent equitable access to vaccines & all the tools needed stop pandemic.
