The shutdown was a takeover, and they don’t intend to give it back

Based on what I'm hearing from House Republicans, I think there's a real possibility the government doesn't reopen at all this year, and the House remains out indefinitely.

Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” isn’t just about tax cuts it quietly guts federal protections and reshapes entire agencies. Here’s what’s buried inside: - Closure of the U.S. Department of Education - 25% expansion of logging in national forests, bypassing environmental reviews and fast-tracking timber production - Rollbacks on clean energy incentives, cutting tax credits for EVs and renewables, gutting key climate provisions - More public lands opened up for drilling, mining, and logging, with royalty breaks for fossil fuel companies - Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, ending U.S. participation in global climate efforts 🆘🆘 - Executive Order 14215, forcing independent federal agencies to follow White House legal interpretations and centralizing authority under the presidency 🆘🆘 - Pension changes for federal workers hired before 2014, cutting take-home pay by raising required contributions, reducing future payouts, and eliminating early retirement supplements - REINS Act-style regulation repeal, where major federal rules expire unless Congress re-approves them every 5 years allowing Trump to quietly erase protections without rewriting laws 🆘🆘 - Expanded executive control over agency budgets, allowing the White House to move federal funds internally without explicit congressional approval - Restoration of impoundment powers, giving Trump the ability to block or delay spending already passed by Congress reviving powers stripped after Watergate 🆘🆘 -‼️‼️Creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), placing White House–aligned teams inside every federal agency with access to internal systems and influence over hiring and daily operations‼️‼️ - Sharp cuts in regulatory enforcement, with agencies like the EPA, CFPB, and Labor and Transportation Departments halting enforcement of key safety, environmental, and anti-discrimination rules 🆘🆘🆘 - Trump’s personal control over economic policy, strengthening his power to direct tariffs, pressure private companies, and dictate pricing with little resistance treating the U.S. economy like his own business 🆘🆘🆘 This bill isn’t just “big.” It’s a roadmap for dismantling oversight, hollowing out federal protections, and handing Trump sweeping, unchecked control. Read the fine print. This would make him a dictator . (Credit @ALTUSNPS )

Trump’s termination of Register of Copyrights is a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis. It is surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models. fortune.com/2025/05/12/donal…

THE GOP IS A LAUGHING STOCK! "Joe Neguse just exposed Mark Amodei's sneaky late-night scheme to sell off public land without proper congressional oversight! Republicans are once again trying to push their unpopular agenda on the public while dodging transparency. When asked if his constituents supported the bill, Amodei answered? NO!"

Thank you, 60 Minutes. You will be around long after Trump is gone. No need to add anything to this! For nine straight weeks, CBS’s “60 Minutes” has held the Trump administration’s feet to the fire, refusing to back down despite a barrage of legal threats and presidential tantrums. The most recent episode tackled Trump’s controversial policies on Ukraine—where correspondent Scott Pelley interviewed President Zelenskyy at a bombed site—and Greenland, highlighting local resistance to Trump’s annexation ambitions. These are just the latest in a series of hard-hitting segments: previous weeks have exposed the administration’s dismantling of USAID, the firing of government watchdogs, and the chilling effects of Trump’s executive orders on diversity and equity. Trump’s response has been as predictable as it is alarming. He’s called “60 Minutes” a “dishonest Political Operative,” demanded the FCC strip CBS of its license, and is pursuing a $20 billion lawsuit over their coverage—especially an interview with Kamala Harris he claims was unfairly edited. He’s even pressed his own FCC appointee to punish CBS and other critical outlets, a move right out of the authoritarian playbook: using government power to silence dissent and intimidate journalists. In an era when too many media organizations shy away from confronting power, “60 Minutes” is showing what real journalism looks like. As Lesley Stahl put it, the show is “fighting for our life” and standing up for the First Amendment. When the stakes are this high—when a sitting president is openly threatening the free press—media courage isn’t just admirable, it’s essential for democracy to survive. repost @other98 — Help this information get to more voters. 📷 A well-informed electorate is a prerequisite to Democracy.—Thomas Jefferson

Republicans are deploying every trick in the book to gut Medicaid while claiming they’re not cutting it. The CBO estimates the latest GOP plan would kick nearly 9 million people off Medicaid. Why? To fund tax cuts that will disproportionately benefit corporations and the rich.

Contemplating Beauty Boosts Abstract Thinking A new study shows that actively contemplating the beauty of art enhances abstract thinking and helps people psychologically distance from everyday concerns. Participants who rated the beauty of ceramic artworks at a gallery scored 14% higher on tests of abstract thought compared to those who simply identified the objects. Those with artistic hobbies saw an even larger boost, over 25%, when asked to engage with beauty. The beauty-focused group also reported stronger self-transcendent feelings, such as feeling moved or inspired. However, they did not report greater overall happiness, suggesting the effect was specific to cognitive engagement rather than mood. The findings support long-standing philosophical claims that beauty can shift perspective and enrich how we think.

“If we were slipping into an authoritarian situation, step by step, it would pretty much look like what’s happening right now,” said Larry Diamond, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution who has spent four decades studying how and why democracies fail.
In my first @csmonitor magazine cover, I took a close look at whether Trump's moves are threatening liberal democracy—by talking to experts in countries where it has failed. They're uniformly alarmed. csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2…
