Great research from Rosa Menendez, Clementine Larter and Tom Kenny on #BrownHairsteak butterflies. Also N2 effects on Butterflies by Hannah Risser, and Justin Patton on finding Least Minor moth larva. Today at student research conference @LancsUniLEC with @savebutterflies

Time for 2024 Lancaster autumn butterfly survey, @LancasterCC, checking the ivy and the last buddeia flowers along the alleys and the canal. Huge decline in numbers just 12 Red Admirals, 2 Comma and only 1 Peacock butterfly, in 2018 we saw average of 90! #ButterflyEmergency

I'm calling on the Government to take immediate action to reverse butterfly declines. So frightening to see so many important butterflies and moths missing this summer from Northern England! Sign the petition: butterfly-conservation.org/e…

In such a bad year for butterflies, it’s nice to see our priority species Northern Brown Argus butterfly doing ok at #myersallotment @savebutterflies last week. Great management by the fantastic volunteer team, the grazier @grazingmatters and the landowner @LeightonHall

What a super day I had at @savebutterflies #myersallotment reserve in Silverdale, North Lancashire. Met the A-team’ers stepping in to help out the Butterfly Conservations volunteer reserves officer. Thanks for all the above-and-beyond effort guys.

Fabulous work going on in #Cumbria by #rspb for wildlife and @savebutterflies.
Seeing hills thick with regenerating trees, a rewiggled river showing #rewilding's many benefits and meadows buzzing with life made a dream visit to @WildHaweswater 🏔️ Thanks @leeinthelakes @unitedutilities @Natures_Voice for sharing its wonderful – and still unfolding – story.

Working with #OurUplandCommons project, with @LancsUniLEC and PhD student Sophie Mowbray, on Derwent Common #LakeDistrict today. To reaffirm presence of Mountain Ringlet butterflies, didn’t find them at a few 550m sites but did record over 14 above 600m. Perfect day for it.

I was staggerd to see a marsh fritillary at 470m chase off a golden ringed dragon fly on the side of Robinson, above Buttermere today…. They’re getting around!
Mad, impulsive 4am dash from Cambridge to Cumbria (good forecast) in hope of seeing Mountain Ringlet. What a day! Also Northern Brown Argus, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and a completely unexpected Marsh Fritillary at Latterbarrow. #30DaysWild @BC_Cumbria @savebutterflies

Wowzer! Marsh fritillary at 459m (highest in England?) in sheltered beck valley on side of Robinson, near Buttermere. I’ve seen no food plant so it’s just moving through, but mountain passes no obstacle to expansion in Cumbria!

Tragic scenes of Avian Influenza / Bird flu in a mid Wales Black headed Gull colony near Welshpool. Vibrant and noisy only a week ago and today dead and dying birds littering the colony. So so sad. Feeling helpless ☹️

This is such a good project #CurlewRecovery, working with farmers, land managers, volunteers and community to research, monitor and protect the declining curlew population in South Cumbria. Delighted to support thro #FacilitationGroup
"Aye, I remember that field used to have lots of curlews nesting". A tussock with a full clutch of #curlew eggs. Finding the nest allows site-specific protection. Volunteers and farmers work together.

What a fab morning! #KendalMuseum, maybe oldest Natural History museums in UK. Wonderful old butterfly and moth collection showing the diversity that was once at some sites, Silver studied blue butterfly at Witherslack and netted carpet moth collected by Rev Euston Nurse in 1908!
