Phil highlights how his group combines biocatalysis and decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions to rapidly construct complex saturated heterocycles, structural motifs of high value in drug discovery, yet traditionally challenging to synthesize. He also discussed the wide application of sulfonyl hydrazides as versatile radical precursors for redox-neutral cross-coupling reactions. These reagents, easily prepared from common ketones and alcohols and commercially available, can be used to generate diverse radical intermediates without needing external oxidants or reductants.
