It is especially powerful for complex geometry, organic surfaces, and shapes driven by multiple interdependent parameters. In yacht and boat design, it can be used for surface modeling, real-time design calculations, and custom solutions that would be difficult to achieve efficiently with standard modeling tools alone. It is particularly valuable when precision, flexibility, and fast iteration are required. That said, Grasshopper is not the right tool for everything. Because every element requires setup, it is usually most efficient for the larger and more influential parts of the design, while smaller details are often completed later in Rhino. Used strategically, Grasshopper can make design development far more flexible and precise, offering greater control and refinement to achieve smooth Class-A surfaces.

ALT 🔶 Turning Circle Turning-circle measures are standard geometric indicators of a yacht’s turning performance during a steady turn at constant speed and helm angle. They show how much space the yacht needs to turn. The main measures are: • Advance: distance traveled along the initial course until heading changes by 90°. • Transfer: lateral offset over the same interval. • Tactical diameter: lateral distance from the initial track when heading change reaches 180°. • Steady turning radius / diameter: radius or diameter of the near-circular path once the turn becomes steady. These values are taken from the recorded track and reported in meters or normalized by a reference length such as waterline length.

ALT 🔶 Tacking For sailing yachts, tacking is often the most practical standard test of turning ability because it reflects real operation: the yacht turns through the wind while rudder action, speed, heel, and sail forces vary significantly. Key performance measures are: • Tacking time: time from helm application until the yacht settles on the new close-hauled course. • Heading response: how quickly and smoothly the yacht passes through head-to-wind. • Speed loss and recovery: minimum speed during the tack and how quickly speed is regained. • Distance lost: especially lateral loss and VMG loss. Unlike the turning circle, tacking combines hydrodynamic and aerodynamic effects, so the outcome depends on hull, keel, rudder, sail plan, trim, and apparent wind changes.

ALT 🔶 Williamson turn The Williamson turn is a standard man-overboard recovery maneuver used when the point of loss is uncertain or visibility is poor. Its aim is to bring the vessel back onto the reciprocal of its original course. In the classic method: • hard rudder is applied toward the MOB side, • reversed after about 60° of heading change, and • returned to midships about 20° before the reciprocal heading. As a handling test, it highlights turning ability and directional control during large heading changes, as well as inertia, yaw stability, and speed effects.
