Today, women in Afghanistan are being shot in the streets simply for anting an education, wanting a job. Wanting to work and wanting to walk outside without a man's permission. Taliban security forces killed one person and several wounded. Dozens arrested including women and girls. It started last Friday, when Taliban imams announced from mosque loudspeakers that women were forbidden from leaving their homes without full hijab, including face cover. Morality police flooded Herat's streets, markets, and shopping centers, batons in hand, arresting women for their clothing. Just one day after some men in the West rolled out the red carpet for the Taliban, normalizing them, legitimizing them, shaking their hands, you can see how savagely women being shot and beaten up in the streets.

La jueza María Lourdes Afiuni lleva más de 16 años sin recuperar sus derechos tras ser detenida por cumplir con su deber. En 2009, Afiuni fue detenida, encarcelada, torturada física y mentalmente, y sometida a un proceso que hasta hoy sigue abierto luego de que otorgara medidas cautelares al ciudadano Eligio Cedeño. Por las medidas a Cedeño, cuya detención había sido catalogada como arbitraria según la ONU, Afiuni fue condenada por corrupción propia, pese a que la propia fiscal del caso dejó constancia en el expediente de que no existió contraprestación alguna, requisito indispensable para que ese delito se configure según la legislación venezolana. Su caso generó lo que se conoce como el “efecto Afiuni”, el miedo sistemático de jueces y funcionarios judiciales a actuar con independencia frente a asuntos con carga política. Es uno de los símbolos más documentados de la destrucción de la autonomía del Poder Judicial en Venezuela. La Ley de Amnistía aprobada meses atrás la excluyó. La consulta nacional sobre reforma de la justicia penal anunciada por Delcy Rodríguez no puede ser tomada en serio mientras víctimas como Afiuni permanezcan en un limbo jurídico sin resolución.

Luego de jornadas intensas en mi cuarto año en Oslo Freedom Forum, ya estoy en casa. Año tras año he escuchado relatos de activistas de todo el mundo. Relatos difíciles de escuchar, pero muchísimo más difíciles de recordar y contar por quienes realmente los han vivido. Y aun así, se paran frente a nosotros para contarnos la dura realidad que se vive en sus países. En estos cuatro años en #OsloFF, cada vez vuelvo más convencido de seguir construyendo herramientas abiertas y resistentes a la censura, herramientas que de una forma u otra puedan ser útiles para personas que viven bajo ataque permanente por parte de sus propios gobiernos. Conocer de primera mano a activistas que están en la primera línea, y compartir con ellos una comida, un café o incluso cinco minutos de conversación, es algo que para mí no tiene precio. Agradezco enormemente a @HRF por permitirme vivir esta experiencia, y felicitaciones porque cada año el foro logra reunir historias, personas y luchas que nos recuerdan por qué este trabajo importa. Más del 70% de la población mundial vive bajo autoritarismo. Probablemente tú que lees esto formes parte del 30% privilegiado. Si ese es tu caso, recuerda esto: La libertad y la democracia no son algo que podamos dar por sentado, sino algo que debemos defender cada día. El precio de perderlas es muy alto.
