The real question isn’t whether Turkey belongs in NATO. It’s whether NATO - with a wavering US, a Europe that suffers to defend itself, an active war on its southeastern border, and the Strait of Hormuz closed, can afford to alienate the one ally positioned across every single fault line. Turkey has NATO’s 2nd largest army, hosts İncirlik, Kürecik, and Allied Land Command, controls Black Sea access via Montreux and has had 4 Iranian missiles intercepted over its airspace this month alone. It is the NATO member simultaneously bordering Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the Black Sea, and trying to mediate the Iran war. Questioning Turkey’s role is itself not realistic under current circumstances.
