We have a working phased array! Successfully supported nominal operations for @planet.
We designed and built this antenna in 4 months. From the first time the antenna came off the truck, it was conducting testing with live satellites in less than 6 hours.
Northwood just achieved some major technical validation: our phased array ground station achieved bidirectional communications links over the full duration of satellite passes with Planet Labs — this baby works!!
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. At Northwood we’re taking on the big task of transforming connectivity between Earth and space. And a few days ago we made meaningful progress. Here’s the moment we first received signal from our array:
A whole new frontier needs a whole new ground network. Thanks @FortuneMagazine for the conversation at #BrainstormTech — and to everyone building the future of space access alongside us. 🛰️
"I think the space industry is full of people who are just extremely passionate, curious, and I feel really grateful to have discovered that community," says Northwood Space CEO and former Disney star Bridgit Mendler on her journey into the industry.

Underrated way to go fast is to be ok with saying the perceived dumb thing that is blocking you from an outcome. One of the things that our team is proudest of is cultivating humility/approachability. To be on a team that is entirely focused on the goal and not defending ego it is liberating.
Thanks for having me @TheFP@SulkinMaya !
.@NorthwoodSpace, a maker of critical ground infrastructure for space satellites, raised $100 million in a new funding round. CEO @bridgitmendler joined @EdLudlow to discuss plans for the funding and a $49.8 million contract with the US Space Force bloom.bg/4a0UJRK
.@NorthwoodSpace has closed a $100M Series B to ensure its ground infrastructure is ready to support the anticipated wave of complex missions in orbit.

Bridgit Mendler's Northwood has raised a $100 million series B, co led by Washington Harbour Partners and a16z.
Bridigt will join us on Bloomberg Tech later this morning (830amPT).
Today Northwood has raised $100M in Series B funding led by @WashingHarbour and co-led by @a16z to support a simple objective – take space missions further faster.
This financing follows millions in signed contracts including a $49.8 million contract with the Space Force to support the Satellite Control Network – critical infrastructure used for launches and early satellite operations, to track and control satellites, and to provide emergency support to tumbling and lost satellites.
Northwood welcomed Major General Stephen Purdy and his team to HQ for a discussion on space acquisition priorities. His visit highlighted the U.S. Space Force's focus on ground capacity challenges. We look forward to continued collaboration to deliver resilient infrastructure for national security missions and the potential for Northwood's network and engineering to help close gaps.
Our leadership team met with Chairman Mike Rogers @RepMikeRogersAL of the House Armed Services Committee to discuss defense acquisition reform and the need for resilient, proliferated architectures in securing our national interests.
We value his leadership and the opportunity to share how Northwood is advancing this mission.
We were honored to welcome U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal @RepCarbajal and his team to Northwood HQ. Our founding team led a tour of our manufacturing facility and discussed the critical role of resilient, high-performance ground infrastructure in advancing U.S. and Allied government space interests, as well as the pressing need for acquisition reform.
A few days late on this, but congrats to the 5 @CapitalAlso companies on @SVDG_official ’s NatSec100!
I’m not a designer, but we made the fun graphic below to celebrate.
Congrats @anysignalinc @K2SpaceCo@NorthwoodSpace@RadiantNuclear and @VardaSpace!
No pressure, but I expect all of you to have better rankings next year 👀
Keep going!
This new generation of space requires capacity at scale for dynamic missions. That's why we:
- built the most powerful commercial multi-orbit phased array in 9 months (LEO, MEO, GEO)
- assembled in 5 days
- will be deploying and operational for customers on multiple continents this year
We have successfully demonstrated that our Portal system can deliver 1kW of transmit power and sub-picowatt receive, supporting LEO, MEO and GEO. With arrayed configurations of this module, Northwood has built the highest power commercial communications phased array.
