If you thought tech /AI/ML won’t reproduce biases, look at these translations. A v. simple task. The ones on left are Bengali sentences *without* gender, the ones on right are their English translations w. genders. Just a small e.g. Now imagine all the stuff that AIML will do.
You ask uncomfortable questions to a diplomat: That is journalism.
The diplomat answers the questions in a manner he can: That is diplomacy.
You heckle the diplomat repeatedly & stage a walkout: That’s activism, not journalism.
Germany has 39,000 Japanese citizens; only two of them were suspected of violent crimes in 2023.
By contrast, out of 25,000 Algerians, 1,729 were suspected of committing a violent crime in 2023.
WOW!!!
Never thought we would hear this level of honesty from a Western leader, and certainly not Canada, given the direction of Canada in the past 25 years. Canada's shift towards multialignment is quite clear - and this level of honesty from Carney on Western "fiction" about the old order will be warmly welcomed in much of the Global South:
"We knew that the story about the rules-based order was partially false... We knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused and the victim. This fiction was useful [because of the goods provided by American hegemony]... So we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals. And we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality. This bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... You cannot live within the lie of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination."
Q: Your intel says there’s no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon.
Trump: Well, then my intel is wrong. Who said that?

So how did Air India 171 crash?
Experts suspect simultaneous engine failure — a near impossibility without foul play or fuel contamination.
Ex pilot and aviation expert says very odd for a major public transport aircraft crash like this. Says the aircraft should have easily taken off even with failures. Briefly mentions possibility of “external influence”

'It is very unusual for a major transport aircraft...'
Former Airline Pilot Terry Tozer says he is 'puzzled' by what appears to be a catastrophic failure which led an Air India flight to crash en route to London.
In my experience, Indian people come to the UK, work hard, create business and integrate. By contrast, Pakistanis come here, live in their ghettoes, behave in disturbing ways and prefer Welfare. It's a simple choice.
This is an astonishing interview. The Pak Def Minister is not holding back. He says India staged it. They are ready for all out war. And the world should worry about escalating tensions between two nuclear powers. This is really crazy, even by 2025 standard of craziness!
Works in sales, moved to a small town in Italy 2 years ago. Before that he was in Noida for about 2 years. Has a wife and a dog. We used to meet often, and have been on a couple of road-trips together too with our dogs.
We are back to basics . If you don’t like something , don’t watch it . If you vehemently dislike or disagree with it , write against it but don’t invite the powerful to intrude .
I'm shocked at the number of people who still think that East Asia's rapid economic development happened thanks to free trade and laissez-faire.
The crucial ingredient was state intervention.
The industrial policy toolbox among East Asia's developmental states was humongous. Here are the main pillars of the toolbox.
Trade policy: tariffs, import licensing, export subsidies, etc.
State-directed investment: state-owned enterprises and development banks.
Long-term investment in firms’ capabilities: R&D and worker training.
Attraction of foreign direct investment (with conditions): local content requirements, joint venture requirements.
Decolonised China - Chinese speaking engineers creating Deep Seek, $1 Tn trade surplus, 6th Gen fighter jets.
Decolonised India - fighting on irrelevancies, 10 minute home delivery as tech innovation, and sneakily buying everything China made because they are cheap.
