Alpha School's software is called TimeBack. That's because Alpha wants to give kids their time back. Even my wife, a professional teacher of 20 years, loves the idea of structuring the school day so that it's possible to give kids their time back from the druggery and slog of normal school. School, which is traditionally a place that kids find boring and where they spend weeks or more counting down to summer vacation, takes up a 6 hours per day. As kids get older, homework time is added, sometimes climbing to 7, 8 or 9 hours a day. We take children's most curious, most energetic, most formative years, and we fill them with activity that is often sitting down, taking notes and then demonstrating an intake of knowledge. The most valuable thing a school can give a kid is not content. It's their time. If you can get through academics in only 2 hours a day (3 for high school) with top 1% results, it means that rest of the day can be returned to the kid for the things that actually make up who a person is: passion projects, sports, businesses, friendships, and hard challenges. There is now a pathway to get your time back from the traditional 6-9 hour slog of classes and homework. Kids can use this extra time to work on cool projects. I think that makes this the the best time in history to be a 5-year-old, a 10-year-old, or a 15-year-old.
