Rejecting surveillance capitalism means insisting clearly and unapologetically that markets should serve the people — not the other way around, writes NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner @saalevine. jacobin.com/2026/05/surveill…

"These protections are essential safeguards that would have been recognizable to reformers a century ago. They were won not by the magnanimity of tech companies but by the collective power of working people organizing to demand a fairer economy." (2/3)

@NYCMOIACommr Faiza Ali and our team recently welcomed our Rapid Response Legal Collaborative partners @MaketheRoadNY , @unlocal , and @nylag to our office for a meeting. This meeting gave Commissioner Ali and our partners a chance to connect in person for the first time and discuss programming needs. We thank our RRLC partners who provide essential legal assistance to those detained or at imminent risk of detention and deportation, who may not have the right to see an immigration judge, or who are otherwise facing a fast-track to removal.

Welcome home, Dylan.
Our City is overjoyed that Dylan has finally been released from detention and will be back home with his loved ones in the Bronx. What should have been a time for him to focus on finishing high school instead became ten long months of isolation, after he was taken into custody at what was supposed to be a routine immigration hearing last May. Throughout this injustice, Dylan has shown remarkable strength, resilience, and courage. I wish him a smooth and joyful return to his life, his community, and his future here in New York City. He is a New Yorker, and our city is glad to have him home.

Dylan is coming home!! After 10 long months of ICE detention, nothing can undo the injustice Dylan endured, but his release is a step in the right direction. Thank you to @senschumer, @nycmayor, so many others who offered unwavering advocacy and support. nylag.org/breaking-statement…

"Deborah Berkman, director of the shelter and economic stability project at the New York Legal Assistance Group, said that theft, violence and even sexual assault can be a problem in shelters, where a dozen single adults may share open dormitories."
Shadowing outreach teams during the blizzard, I got curious about what NYC can do for people who are homeless and don't want to sleep indoors, even on frigid nights. Involuntary transports are rare, and Mamdani has been skeptical of a heavy-handed approach nytimes.com/2026/03/13/nyreg…

We’re grateful to the Legislature for restoring full funding for the IOLA Fund in their one-house budget proposals. Civil legal services help New Yorkers facing eviction, domestic violence, immigration challenges and more access justice when they need it most. 🧵

Civil legal services depend on stability to retain staff and meet rising need. But the Executive Budget funds IOLA nearly 25% below what’s needed—threatening jobs and services statewide. We urge @GovKathyHochul to fully fund IOLA in the 30-day amendments. #NYBudget #FullyFundIOLA

Civil legal services are essential for New York. They help: 🏘️ people stay housed, 🤝 access benefits, ✊ protect their rights. But the current State Executive Budget doesn't fully fund the non-taxpayer sourced IOLA Fund by $25 million. (1/2)

We urge the Governor to restore IOLA fully in the 30-day amendments. The $25M shortfall will force providers like us to make cuts when people face housing insecurity, hunger, and deportation. This budget session, let’s reaffirm New York’s commitment to access to justice. (2/2)
