We work with young people from different countries on the Osprey's migration flyway to inspire and enable them to become tomorrow's conservation leaders.
How do we sum up this year’s @GlobalBirdfair in just four photos? We’re incredibly proud to have hosted the Young Conservationists’ Hub sponsored by @Leica_UK
Thank you to everyone who joined us; from our inspirational panelists to the young people who joined us over the wkend
The @ospreylf aims to encourage young conservationists to recognise that they are already a leader. Is it time to tap into your potential? Read the article here: c-js.uk/4hsTkWp
Congratulations to Naffie Sarr, who is the first Gambian woman to attain a @_BTO bird ringing licence. Naffie has worked for KBO for six years and has completed the Evolving Conservation Leadership course with the @ospreylf .
Well done, Naffie, we are all extremely proud of you.
Our new website: kartongbirdobservatory.com
is now live. Many thanks to Wendy James @wendy_TRG for all her hard work producing this. It outlines our research projects, team bios and provides an overview of the habitats we operate in at Kartong. More pages will be added soon.
For the October 2024 World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) and Global Birding & eBird Big Day the KBO team visited the area south of Kafuta, 35km inland from our base on the coast. Over 40 species of bird were recorded, including Yellow-bellied Hyliota.
Earlier this summer, @35_jatta ringed this Osprey, 3R0, at a nest near Rutland Water as part of his @ospreylf & @kartongbirdobs internship. It went on to fledge successfully and today I may have seen it depart on migration. Let’s hope Emmanuel sees it again in The Gambia!
Please read this hugely important and courageous blog by @aliciahaydenart. We were thrilled that Alicia was a key part of the Young Conservationists’ Hub that we organised at @GlobalBirdfair - she is an inspiration.
Birds saved my life. There’s nothing unusual about that.
What’s more unusual about my situation, is that it was birding that caused my life to need saving in the first place.
A true story, my story. Read it here: linktr.ee/ahwildlife@_BTO#Birds#Art#writing#nature

It’s been wonderful having @35_jatta in the UK since late March for his @kartongbirdobs & @ospreylf internship. Huge thanks to @harbourbirds for a fitting send off for Emmanuel - a brilliant boat trip and a final chance to ring some migrant species he may see again in The Gambia
Also fantastic to host our Gambian friend @35_jatta from the @ospreylf & @kartongbirdobs , joining us to see Ospreys during the European part of their lives as well as visiting the @CareysSecret Ringing Station to ring a few African migrants including this Tree Pipit.
Who loves #Swifts ? Check out my brand new episode I took to @GlobalBirdfair . I make these myself and have the wonderful @_BTO fact check them too. I’d really appreciate if you could help me share these to reach kids & families to get them in to nature! youtu.be/7u4pH-kpagA?feature…
@taxidermistelle smashing it at my talk @GlobalBirdfair on Sunday . The draw along was particularly fun and made me think I could go on tour with this show! The @ospreylf team were so fantastic. Huge shout out to every one of you that helped out .You are amazing ! 🦅
The Women Working in Conservation panel was an especially powerful event - courageous and authentic female voices worthy of a headline spot on the Osprey stage (and many other places!) in my view! Hope to meet you all again.
What a brilliant and inspiring weekend at the Young Conservationists’ Hub at @GlobalBirdfair.
Thank you to all of our amazing panelists and workshop leaders, the OLF team and particularly Becky Park for organising it all so well.
We had a great time at #Globalbirdfair ! Our Co-Directors, @roisinbt and Ellen Bradley ran a Creative Campaigning workshop and Seniz Mustafa and Ellen sat on a panel about being a young leader in conservation. Thank you @ospreylf for inviting us!
Of course the first two Osprey chicks chose to fledge when I was away @GlobalBirdfair! 😅 still pinching ourselves that they've produced this phenomenonal brood of four, who will be so important to the future of Ospreys in Southern England and beyond! @harbourbirds
We have lift off! At 10:08am on Sunday the first chick, 5R0 took flight and fledged, settling on a nearby tree. Then, just over an hour later, 5R2 did the same, making it as far as the nest camera perch!

My first @GlobalBirdfair since it’s post-covid relaunch, but the birdfair blues feel just the same; the weird quiet that comes after a great weekend of catching up, meetings, panel chairing and best of all, chaotic dancing.
Huge thank you @ospreylf for hosting this brilliant panel @GlobalBirdfair and to @PeteMRCooper for chairing the discussion so expertly! It's such a privilege to share the floor with so many inspiring young conservationists who are leading the way! @harbourbirds
Props to my fantastic panel of young (yes we’re under the UN definition of young) reintroduction conservationists; @BrittanyMaxted @zoologist_kat Charly Mead and @harvey_tweats. You gave an excellent, meaty discussion which I know from people who attended has genuinely inspired.
