Europe’s Generals Are Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud Germany’s top military man, General Carsten Breuer, stood up at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore this week and said something that should have been said years ago: Europe needs clarity from Washington on whether America actually intends to defend it. This comes, conveniently, right after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanded allies spend 3.5% of GDP on defense while simultaneously warning that China is building a military capable of eating the Pacific for breakfast. Which is a reasonable concern, except that it somewhat implies American attention will be pointed firmly in the other direction when Russia eventually decides to test whether NATO’s Article 5 is a guarantee or a suggestion. Breuer, to his credit, also called out China’s decision to send a delegation without a single minister-level representative to a major security conference. He called it a “lost chance.” I’d call it a message. A fairly clear one. And then there’s the Russia warning. Breuer said Moscow could threaten NATO territory by 2029. Not 2045. Not “someday, maybe.” 2029. That’s three years from now. That’s before most infrastructure projects finish their planning phase. Europe has spent thirty years assuming someone else would handle this. It turns out that someone else has opinions about GDP percentages and a complicated relationship with its own alliance commitments. The generals have noticed.

I like berets. A few stylish online friends wear them in ways I think look good. IMO, they're easier to wear in dark, subdued colors, esp when paired with eclectic outfits without leaning into the stereotype (e.g., no Breton shirts). Easier with workwear. Also helps to have the right personality. Check Laulhère (made in France) and South Pacific Berets for nice ones. Won't know if they work for you until you try.
