While the world's armies debate hypersonic missiles and kamikaze drones, China is showcasing a completely different direction in military technology development.
China's National University of Defense Technology has unveiled a mosquito-sized micro-drone designed for covert reconnaissance and special operations.
Stated specifications:
· weight of less than 0.3 grams;
· wing-flapping frequency of up to 500 times per second;
· bionic design mimicking insect flight;
· capability to carry miniature surveillance and reconnaissance sensors.
China is effectively moving toward a new generation of reconnaissance assets that are virtually impossible to spot visually, extremely difficult to detect via radar, and capable of penetrating areas inaccessible to even small UAVs or reconnaissance teams.
While palm-sized drones were considered a technological breakthrough until recently, military engineers are now attempting to turn ordinary insects into reconnaissance platforms.
Such systems could be used for target surveillance, urban reconnaissance, indoor operations, monitoring personnel movements, and gathering intelligence directly at the target site.
It is quite possible that in a few years, the primary threat to command centers and strategic facilities will not be a cruise missile, but a "mosquito" that no one even notices.
Although this technology might seem like something out of a sci-fi movie, there are still challenges associated with its use, specifically:
· limited battery life: due to its tiny size, the drone cannot be equipped with a high-capacity battery, resulting in short flight times;
· low weight: even a strong gust of wind can blow it away or knock it off course.
