My thoughts - as a bereaved father and as a maternity safety campaigner - on today’s @OckReview and why it’s so vital we all learn the lessons from it. @ShaunLintern @JamesTitcombe @Jeremy_Hunt @HSJnews @HSJEditor @mrjamesob @MattHancock @willquince pineconesandstudydays.co.uk/…

Happy twelfth birthday kiddo. ā€œTwelveā€ has hit me hard today - it’s passed in the blink of an eye. It feels like you arrived just yesterday and yet somehow also feels an eternity ago. I love you more than words can ever explain, and by golly I miss you. šŸŒ²šŸ’™

Ten years and one day ago, I shared our lived experience at the launch of the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle.

And yet, a decade on, we’re still not where we need to be, and in some ways the landscape is more problematic than I’ve known it at any point in the nearly-twelve-years since the reality of perinatal death became my reality completely out of the blue in the blink of an eye.

There’s still so much to do. I only hope that in the weeks and months to come, we’ll see different, conflicting, agendas put to one side and a universal focus on building the system up to make it better emerges - because *that’s* how we make things better for families too.

Parenting a child that has died is a very different experience to the norm, but last week I had the great honour of addressing the APPG on Baby Loss about the importance of high quality bereavement care - definitely one for the parenting bucket list! šŸ’™šŸŒ²šŸ’–šŸŒˆšŸ’–šŸŒˆ

Twelfth #waveoflight, the first time I’ve ever been away from home for it. So grateful to work with friends who just got on board without batting an eyelid. Things in the bereaved parent community are pretty ugly at the moment, so this felt like a moment of respite and calm…

Paracetamol is the first choice of painkiller if you're pregnant and is still considered the safest choice of pain relief during pregnancy. There is no evidence it causes autism in children. Kate Brintworth, our Chief Midwifery Officer, explains moreā€ÆšŸŽ„

We discussed this last night, and Hallie (aged 6) said ā€œwhen I’m Prime Minister, I’ll order this to happen!ā€ We had a little chat about how our Parliamentary democracy works 🤣 but these constituents are behind you on this @tomgordonLD, keep going šŸ’ŖšŸ»
Tonight Parliament failed disabled people. šŸ„€ Labour voted down my amendment to scrap unfair bus pass restrictions. 🌳 The Conservatives whipped their MPs to abstain. 🚌 This isn’t good enough. I won’t stop until disabled people get the fair, accessible transport they deserve.

I’m delighted to be recruiting a new Deputy Chief Midwifery Officer @NHSEngland. An exciting role within my team working with maternity and neonatal colleagues to provide strategic leadership and professional guidance across maternity care and policy. bit.ly/40FRVVN

Rachael & I have never met. Rachael & Tom’s son Henry was stillborn at the end of 2023. I got a message from Rachael a few days later and we’ve kept in touch. On Friday this beautiful card and incredible drawing arrived. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get something in my eye.

Then something like this arrives and it reminds me that it’s not me doing it kiddo, it’s you. I’m just parenting you the only way I know how. And a card like this…it gives me the energy to keep going.

And it hit me…things like this are your ā€œcertificates from schoolā€. You’ll never get one for getting better with scissors, but on Friday you got one for helping someone else keep putting one foot in front of another, and that’s worth a gold star in anyone’s book. 🌟
