We're super-excited for our 24th annual BOSC, #BOSC2023, starting on July 24! Don't miss the opening keynote by Sara El-Gebali (@yalahowy), after a brief "Welcome to BOSC" session including @obf_news and #cofest overviews. open-bio.org/events/bosc-202… 🍐
If you’re not at the pre-#BOSC2023#cofest, you’re missing out on the interesting discussions, fruitful collaborations, and amazing lunches provided by our local hosts, @ENSdeLyon / @RDPlab (thank you, Jérémy Just!)

I've only logged into my dormant Twitter account to check for any messages etc (I no longer have a working Twitter client). Nowadays I am on Mastodon, see fediscience.org/@pjacock - Thanks.
Do people have favorite genome similarity matrix viz examples that they would suggest we implement in sourmash? Think "have N genomes / samples, want to cluster & display comparison of them all." Pointers to papers and tutorials v. welcome! cc @pjacock ref github.com/sourmash-bio/sour…
Great work by @pjacock @Llewelyn68 and Pete Thorpe, finally getting this one into the public eye!
My personal takeaway from working on this is that accurate metabarcoding is much harder than most people, or publications, let on.

Just a reminder that you have one body to last forever so you can wear a mask wherever you feel like it and fuck anyone who pressures you to take it off
If you want to automatically follow on 🐘 the people that you follow on 🐤, Debirdify is a good way to do it. Do it now while you still can. debirdify.pruvisto.org/
The @UniOslo now imposing a two-factor authentication without asking for any feedback from the scientific community. We now need to have our phone to validate the login with ssh for instance! Every freaking time... It is very annoying IMO. Also imposed on email, calendars, etc.
If you are a college student who likes to nod intently at your professors while they're talking in class, just know that all of them adore you and think you are the absolute greatest
I see questions like, "Can I just post stuff on preprint servers instead of submitting to journals?" on Quora pretty regularly.
Sure - if you don't care about having a full-time paid career in research.
Student recently told me she doesn't need to publish anything, because Biorxiv exists. Of course grant agency wanted real publications and we didn't get the grant renewal. i don't blame biorxiv but its existence gives a great excuse for lazy students not to write polished papers
We are so sad to share the news that our key architect and lead engineer has passed away. @SimonGladman1 was as smart and generous as they come - a role model for us all. Deepest condolences to his many friends and much loved family biocommons.org.au/news/simon…
