Neil Postman's questions for any new technology: - What problem does it solve? - Whose problem is it? - What new problems does it create? - Which people will be most impacted by it? - Which shifts in economic and political power will result? - What unintended uses will it have?

I’m looking for examples abstraction layers in tech where the folks who knew how the abstraction worked retired and no one was left that actually understood it. The bigger scale the better. For example imagine if no one knew how HTTP or TCP worked anymore (but real examples).

the most important thing about the log4j incident is that it’s clear and incontrovertible evidence in support of whatever beliefs i already have about software development

I think nearly universal vulns like log4shell can be a great litmus test for orgs SSDLC maturity - some will be many weeks to produce a patch, and some will have this fixed and back on their features backlog by Monday morning

Retweeting for reach. And to ask; for those who have conducted or participated in student-supported software development projects, can you share some of the successes you've seen?
We are looking for projects for our SE capstone. We want projects that "make the world a better place", and are willing to meet with our students once a week. We don't charge for this. If you know a worthy org we could talk to, please let us know. RTs for reach appreciated.

Dan McFarland and I studied this in detail -- not every article cited by a review has its future citations suppressed. We find that reviews redefine a subfield around a handful of key articles, which receive a substantial increase in future attention. journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…
