HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY PHILIPPINES!
Today, we wave the flag, sing the anthem, and paint our feeds in blue and red. We celebrate the day we broke free from foreign chains, proudly claiming ownership of our own destiny. It is a beautiful sight, but if we are being completely honest with ourselves, the beauty is only skin deep. How can we celebrate freedom when so many of our people are still shackled by systemic poverty, choked by corruption, and forced to leave their own families just to survive in foreign lands? We pride ourselves on being a nation of survivors, but we should not have to just survive. We deserve to thrive.
The harshest truth we must face today is that our greatest oppressor is no longer a foreign empire. It is our own collective amnesia and a toxic culture of blindly worshiping leaders. We will never truly be free until we outgrow this political fanaticism. We treat politicians like messiahs, clapping for bare minimum duties while making excuses for their glaring failures. They are public servants, not deities. When we defend a leader's ego over our country's well being, we betray the very heroes who bled for our independence. True patriotism means holding power accountable, questioning the status quo, and demanding the governance we actually deserve.
The Philippines can do so much better. Our people are brilliant, creative, and fiercely capable. We do not need to bow to political dynasties or pin our futures on the empty promises of charismatic figures. A nation’s greatness is built by the strength of its citizens, not the egos of its politicians. Let us stop romanticizing our resilience and start demanding systemic change. May we finally find the courage to free our minds, challenge our leaders, and become the nation we were always meant to be.
