A drone has three brains. The one that keeps it flying cannot be overridden by the one that thinks. The one that thinks cannot directly address a motor. The separation is enforced by hardware, not software convention. That is the architecture.

The companion computer gets OTA updates mid-flight using the same A/B partition patterns as billions of IoT devices.

Swarm intelligence starts with the individual unit. Get the drone brain wrong and no coordination layer recovers it. The full architecture — three brains, two protocols, one envelope: architectingautonomy.substac…

Most agentic AI failures aren’t model failures. They’re authority failures. As autonomy scales, the risk surface isn’t cognition - it’s coordination. If agents can act faster than governance can reason about them, you don’t have autonomy. You have acceleration without control.

We spent years optimizing for scale. What broke wasn’t performance, it was coherence. In autonomous systems, stability becomes the constraint long after scale feels “solved.” That’s the shift this piece explores. architectingautonomy.substac…

Autonomy doesn’t fail because AI isn’t smart enough. It fails because authority was never designed. open.substack.com/pub/archit…

Autonomy didn’t arrive with AI. It arrived with scale. AI doesn’t create the problem. It exposes it. Autonomy without architecture produces instability. Structure precedes scale. architectingautonomy.substac…

Should a Solutions Architect (SA) be able to code? The question 'To Code or Not to Code' for SAs has never been more pertinent. Coding skills are no longer just a nice-to-have, but a crucial asset for SAs in today's cloud-driven landscape. sempf.io/blog/tocodeornot/
