The reactionary mind wants to believe that a place as populous and diverse as NYC is Hobbesian: one step away from consuming itself unless restrained by the forces of order.
It cannot fathom a solidarity and unity that emerges from difference, instead of homogeneity.
NYC lives rent free in their heads because it disproves their theory of society.
