I'm kinda terrible with social media, so I'm trying another, thanks to an invite from a friend! I'm now on the app named for the great expanse of atmosphere that typically appears Blue by day (when not completely white, grey, or covered in warmer colours). Same handle there.

Welp the android app has updated, so I'm deleting and will probably never log on again. I doubt anyone would want to spoof me after my inactive account is deleted, but just know it's not me. Find me in the sky or elephant zone! So long and thanks for all the fish!

Since this hellsite is rapidly imploding, I'll probably completely cease activity here but keep my handle (although how that works with inactive accounts being deleted is unclear...) and only post over there.

(Falling to my knees, begging, pleading) Please. Folks, seriously. PLEASE. Do not - and I can’t emphasize this enough - set the state on fire this weekend.

Here’s to the Salt of the Earth types on whom all real progress lies 🍷
Lots of NANOGrav folks are rightly making the news but I want to highlight Prof. Sarah Vigeland, who shies away from the limelight, but is the chair of the NG gravitational-wave Detection working group. It's meticulous scientists like Sarah who make sure the analysis is right!

Rumors of an upcoming announcement from @NANOGrav have not been grossly exaggerated. I can’t wait to share more with you on June 29th! More details about the event will be shared soon, for now, mark your calendars!

If anyone would prefer to read about the #pulsar announcements in comic form, @PHDcomics has you covered!
Today's groundbreaking gravitational-wave discovery explained in pictures by @PHDcomics. Congrats to @NANOGrav @EPTAGW @InPTA_GW @CSIRO_ATNF and the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array. physics.aps.org/articles/v16…

If you like open access papers (the best kind, of course), here's plenty of links to peruse!
Lovely coordination of the pulsar timing papers on the arXiv today: 1 @NANOGrav headline arxiv.org/abs/2306.16213 2 @EPTAGW headline arxiv.org/abs/2306.16214 3 @CSIRO_ATNF headline arxiv.org/abs/2306.16215 4 Chinese PTA headline arxiv.org/abs/2306.16216 1/🧵

This is a really lovely explanation of what @NANOGrav is (and applies, with minor changes, to the @EPTAGW, @InPTA_GW, and PPTA)

This point from @chrislintott is one of my absolute favorite parts of @NANOGrav's work — can you imagine calling up JPL and being like, 'Yo we don't think you know where all the planets actually are"...?!
Replying to @NANOGrav
This is a staggeringly difficult measurement - requiring, amongst much else, knowing the position of the centre of mass of the solar system to a precision of less than 100m. Previous results were confused because we didn't know where Jupiter was accurately enough (5/n)

A new window on the universe! Pulsar-timing arrays present evidence for a very-low-frequency gravitational wave background, consistent with a population of binary supermassive black holes throughout the universe. arstechnica.com/science/2023…

Q: Give me a nice analogy. A: The Earth is a ship on a cosmic sea. Every once in a while, we’re hit by a wave, and we know something went by. But now, for the first time, we can start to see the choppiness of the entire ocean, and we’re learning what else lives in our sea. 12/n
