Really proud & happy to see my first first-author paper out @brainstimj 🎉 Have a look to discover how vagus nerve stimulation increases stomach-brain coupling via a dopaminergic midbrain pathway. It was a great collaborative effort, thanks to all co-authors! 💪
ALT Using a single-blind randomized crossover design, we investigated the effect of acute right-sided transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) versus sham stimulation on stomach-brain coupling. In line with preclinical research, taVNS increased stomach-brain coupling in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the midbrain while boosting coupling across the brain. Crucially, in the cortex, taVNS-induced changes in coupling occurred primarily in transmodal regions and were associated with changes in hunger ratings as indicators of the subjective metabolic state.
Is the vagus nerve all about regulating 'rest & digest'? Our @TrendsCognSci review shows that vagal afferents support survival more broadly, helping organisms to 'strive to survive' by gating internal signals.

ALT The vagal afferent pathway and its theorized function in allostatic behavior. Interoception encodes bodily demands that arise once an allostatic set point, such as a sufficient nutrient supply, is unmet. Interoceptive signals can be evoked by changes in bodily states (e.g., lack of nutrients) or emulated by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS).
It was a fantastic opportunity to give this talk about stomach-brain interactions and vagus nerve stimulation at #dgppn today! Thank you @cornu_copiae for the invitation and organization 😊
It was an honor to open the conference this morning with an excellent symposium on somatic symptoms of depression at #dgppn. Great contributions by @revivaciously, @OpelNils, @SThanarajah. Great to see the surging interest in the community.
We also have more on non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation to present at #PuG2023.
I will show how food cues can be used to contrast exteroception vs. interoception with fMRI EGG, and if we stimulate vagal afferents, we can increase the relative weight of interoceptive signals.
Is HRV a good proxy of vagal tone? We show that vagus nerve stimulation reduces HRV without altering HR, contradicting the idea that increased HRV reflects heightened vagal tone. Work w/ @revivaciously, @koeniglab, & @cornu_copiae

Increased stomach-brain coupling ➡️ better integration of interoceptive signals that encode the metabolic state.
Huge congrats @revivaciously for getting this amazing work out as your first paper, big thanks to the team @cornu_copiae & @BrainAndStomach

New 🧠⚡️paper from the lab.
Congratulations to our stellar MD student @revivaciously on her first paper: a tour de force that may help us better understand how the gut and the brain interact to guide behavior.
