The current and future global burden of cancer among adolescents and young adults: a population-based study Out on Lancet Oncology
This study quantifies the global burden of cancer among adolescents and young adults (ages 15–39) in 2022 and projects trends through 2050. Using data from the GLOBOCAN database, researchers found that 1.3 million cancer cases and 377,621 deaths occurred in 2022, with higher incidence in high-income countries but higher mortality in low-income regions. The most common cancers were breast and cervical cancer, and outcomes varied significantly by region and income level, with case fatality rates ranging from 12% in high-income to 57% in low-income countries. By 2050, the cancer burden in low HDI countries is expected to double, despite declines in very high HDI regions. These findings highlight the need for targeted cancer control strategies to address global disparities.
