They call it "pre-boarding" but they don't fool me. I can see that it is actual boarding.

Minutes before my Series A partner pitch at Sutter Hill, my co-founder in NYC called me to wish me luck but I could hear a little tremble in his voice and I heard some chaotic shouting and sirens in the background. This was to be expected in NYC, but out of abundance of caution I asked how things were going. Without missing a beat he said, "Yep, everything's great. Numbers look good, systems going, sales up, ***lowers voice and whispers*** "the office is on fire", retention looks good" The Indian restaurant below @yext had caught fire and the flames scrotched through our conference room on the 2nd floor, burning the building. The fire department arrived with axes through the glass windows to save people from open flames right before, across the country, I opened my laptop and told Tench Coxe, Andy Sheehan, @laserlikemike, @sampullara how Yext was going to burn down local listings. The round closed. So did the office.

Skeptics say "If AI makes you so much more productive, where are all the apps?" People's attention is the bottleneck, overcome only by a scaleable go-to-market machine. Not cheap/easy. If you pay attention, there are delightful free apps posted every day on here, far more than before.

Strangely satisfying to see Opus 4.8 struggling with Python packaging. Finally met its match

I've used William James' writing on habit with students in grade 8. James makes the case that we are bundles of habits, that character itself is formed through the conscious repetition of chosen actions. He wrote that by age thirty, your character has "set like plaster." Now, William James is difficult for 8th graders. But they can absolutely grasp the core idea: that who you become depends on what you practice doing, day after day. We talk about it in concrete terms. If you practice being patient when something is frustrating, patience becomes easier. If you practice quitting when things get hard, quitting becomes your default. James gives them a framework for understanding why effort matters that goes far deeper than "because I said so." By means of maintaining enthusiasm regarding the experience of reading difficult texts carefully together, pausing to laugh as we share examples, they learn to enjoy the struggle.

Interesting take from a public company CEO. Worth reading. Here's my reaction. Software is important, and AI lets you write software more quickly, but software is VERY FAR from the only concern. Most often, software is not the bottleneck to being able to scale up a company successfully. And the companies with high performing sales, marketing, customer success, design, engineering, etc can benefit a ton from AI as well, it's not only a tool for startups. I wouldn't be surprised if the eventual outcome is much like the web -- originally thought to usher in a decentralized future, in reality it allowed centralization like never before as there is a power law when it comes to companies and their performance. How many startups have automation like Google, who famously has enormous amounts of code being checked in, almost entirely automated at this point? My AI usage is not as sophisticated as that, and I bet it's not just me. Back to reviewing my weekly dependabot alerts.. πŸ˜…
