Honestly, nothing like reading the scrawls of old warnings in the flickering of the fires you foretold.

In one day, Sam Altman got fired from OpenAI, YouTube started threatening unlabeled AI content with a perma ban, and Discord discontinued their AI without explanation. Is something happening behind closed doors that we don't know about yet?

A few other Bay Area people follow me here, is anyone interested with the weather being less wet now to meetup in a park or along the water in Oakland/San Francisco for some boardgames some weekend in May?

Recent @Outlook mobile updates are breaking user settings and resetting things like email signatures. You won't see a signiture on your messages as you type them but it's appending them during the send now. Turn this off again if you don't want to spam your friends with ads.

Twitter's removed the retweet attribution feature, I was intending to come back for a bit because some people I care about are still on this site. I don't think I can stay here though. Please use another one of my socials or reach out if you don't know them.

If it seems like the world of "AI" and "AI ethics" is moving too fast, I'd like to point out that the fundamental problems are in fact relatively unchanging and keeping an eye on the people involved can be a good anchor. Two cases in point: >>

Computerphile is calling out Bing. The AI Enabled search lies, misleads and bullies it's users. Its really disappointing to see that nothing was learned from Tay. youtu.be/jHwHPyWkShk

Companies like OpenAI and Stability AI have stolen trillions of dollars of human-created value and are selling it back to us, and are normalising theft. The damage they are doing across domains is incalculable and can never be repaid in damages. The models should be disgorged.

Googles demonstrated some cool AI medical tech they developed by spending years on extremely focused research. For example diabetic retinopathy. ChatGPT or AI as a general purpose medical staff is just an abstraction around medical malpractice.
People be mad because they think GPT-5 might accelerate medical work exponentially. Complete, utter nonsense. Folks, AI is not one-size-fits all. I guarantee that GPT-5 will not be able to reason in a reliable way about novel molecular pathways; that’s wildly unrealistic.

Game Devs: I've been working on a tool I'm open sourcing in a couple weeks and am trying to decide on a license. I'm happy to be flexible on this. Are there licenses that are politically easier for you to use on your projects? This is an area I don't know much about.

What a terrible thing it is that many people lose confidence or even change careers because of the doing of mediocre bosses and managers. Titleing yourself as a boss or a leader is easy, the difficult part is to really be one.

The amount of times I've been asked about the performance impacts of adding telemetry to #dotnet applications using #opentelemetry I had to actually write a post on it. TL;DR it's small, and if you're bothered at that level, maybe consider moving Rust. martinjt.me/2023/04/02/does-…
