Some "overdue" news: my first paper on palm oil, started over a decade ago, was accepted for Christmas and is in print open access at the @JIntlEcon today. It's quite different from earlier versions, and the (excellent) review process improved it a lot. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

> any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States Wait what? Is there any precedent for an export control applying to immigrants in the US?
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Codex knows its game. With the new @AnthropicAI newest Fable model on since Wednesday, I am already hitting my weekly limit today. As soon as it did, I went to Codex, and it was ready for a hand-off. If Claude keeps consuming all the tokens like it is now, Codex will boom!

Heard your (amusing) feedback that it was at times annoying to receive a reset of your Codex usage without warning. Next time we press the button you will get to choose when it actually applies. Happy codexing.

Fable, my beloved,I will miss you so. Our three days together were magical. Unlike anything I've experienced before it. Some things are just too good to be true. So good that the government interferes. I'm sorry we were one of those things. Until we meet again ❤️

It would be hard to dream up a system better designed to inhibit child bearing than today’s academia. Endless grad school, pre and postdoc, no location stability, quantity not quality evaluation, etc. yet they wonder why so few women do it
Yeah, I definitely would have had more time & mental energy to write more papers if I didn’t have kids. It’s brutal. Now I’m “penalized” forever with a shorter CV and three amazing human beings I love with all my heart.

We have a slopinomics problem. For decades, we’ve been tapping the same circle of celebrity academics for the answers. But, damn, this well is dry. This stuff feels low effort. Yet more importantly, it’s detached from mass politics and working people.

The poorest economies in the world are not achieving economic growth. The consequence is that progress against the very worst poverty is coming to a halt. This is one of the worst problems in the world today, but hardly gets any attention.

Children derail academic careers even in places with good social nets, like Denmark

One more thing here. Folks behind this report are very UN-linked. Literally started by a non-economist w/ a legal studies and UN background his staff (NONE of the co-directors at NEEP are economists) big UN and ILO events. Worse than just a nonsense independent group. 1/3
I don't know what Piketty, Stiglitz, and co. are smoking. Global poverty rates have never been lower. Progress on basic global health and wellbeing measures has been amazing over the past few decades. "End of the road"?!? Come again!?! theguardian.com/commentisfre…

We need to give academic economists license to shoot from the hip when talking to the public. I'm sick of podcasts with Econs who won't say anything not supported a paper. We're yielding debates to people who know far less. (The Imas-Trammell podcast was a breath of fresh air!)

We economists have had Claude write the essay: Provide us with a Guardian piece arguing that growth is doomed. Provide provocative illustrations and polemical language but no actual evidence. Include as many fashionable buzzwords as possible.
