I cannot abide this dirty soda trend. It’s been established for decades now that a “dirty” beverage has olive brine in it

Reading an epub file looks like you’re scrolling a Wikipedia page while reading a tastefully scanned PDF makes you feel like Gandalf in the Minas Tirith archives
can the ppl who pirate textbooks & academic articles please start using this new piece of cutting edge late 2000s technology called the "epub" file

interestingly, नाग as a sanskrit word for "elephant" doesn't seem to come from a synecdoche in which the elephant's trunk is compared to a snake (though kalidasa makes this pun), but from an older meaning like "hairless animal" which specialized into "snake" and "elephant" forms

“Fulfill” is such a bizarre word formation. Imagine if we had other words like coolchill, hotheat, wholeheal, draftdraw, bondbind, seatsit, webweave. We kind of have this in telltale, singsong, dripdrop but those are the other way around (following ablaut reduplication)

Anyone ever seen interstate-induced clouds before? Low level CU developed perfectly along major interstates around Houston this morning. Kind of shocking to see such perfectly lined up clouds. #txwx

I had a buddy who interned for the House of Angostura and he asked why they don't just put a label on the bitters that's the right size for the bottle They straight up killed him and put his body in the dumpster. He was my friend

I knew a guy in undergrad who was obsessed with Hayek except that he thought “the road to serfdom” was an expression that basically meant “slippery slope” so he was constantly saying stuff like “that’s gonna put us on the road to serfdom”

As an example, the Turkish word "Hoca" (teacher, Islamic priest) and the Japanese word 和尚 (Oshô, meaning Buddhist priest) come from the same word "Upādhyāya" (teacher) in Sanskrit upādhyāya -> xwāja (Classical Persian) -> Hoca (Turkish) upādhyāya -> uvajjhāa (Prakrit) -> 和尚 hwa dzyangH (Middle Chinese) -> 和尚 Oshô (Japanese)
