The NWS is currently experiencing significant staffing challenges across multiple regions. Alaska, Central, and Western regions are particularly strained, with vacancy rates exceeding 20% across these Regions, which is directly impacting critical forecasting services.

These are @NHC_Atlantic's mean forecast errors since 1990. A forecast 5 days out in 2024 was as accurate as one 2 days out in 2000. For saving society billions, thank the NHC team, @NOAA's modeling investments, and dedicated researchers like my friend Andy. He was fired today.
Unfortunately I can confirm the rumors going around today since I received "the email"...I don't want to make any comments other than I am exploring legal options in a couple of avenues. I will probably be deactivating this account for a variety of reasons soon. I always advocate contacting representatives about the importance of the NWS/NOAA mission.

Morning all! I've been encouraged by the outpouring of support for all of us in NWS/NOAA. I wanted to specify a detail that I think is relevant from some conversations I've had. Most of us (at least at EMC) who were terminated were officially "probationary" because we are new federal employees, but have been working for NOAA in some capacity (usually on the contract or university side) for 5, 10, 15 years. So we're the group that has the unique combination of early career motivation/drive but also enough expertise to be quickly effective as we are promoted into new roles. This is not the group you'd get rid of if you wanted to make an organization more efficient - it's what you'd do if you want to destroy an organization. I'd like to assume the best and hope that's unintentional. Hopefully the value of what we do can be communicated effectively.

"[The removal of public data has] real world consequences, leaving individuals, families, communities, and policymakers alike without access to secure, reliable federal data that they have paid for and expect to use."
The AMS joins over 230 organizations and 2,600 individuals in submitting the following letter to Congress, expressing concern and strong opposition to the selective removal of public data from federal websites: bit.ly/42RqXwR

For my trop met class, my students need to plot 1000-500 mb thickness using a simple web interface. NCEP/NCAR R1 only works through 2014. UWyoming not working. Plymouth State Univ website is great but plots based on upper air data - not great for TC over ocean. Any ideas??
