It's staggering how many people have been killed by COVID worldwide The central estimate of the true death toll of the continuing pandemic, using excess deaths (as calculated by The Economist), is 27.3 million It's hard to imagine how many that is. How a big a pile that is 🧵

Hi there! Just a reminder that we absolutely crushed seasonal flu and and drove one lineage extinct when we made an effort to mitigate viral transmission. SARS-CoV-2 isn't so easy, but imagine if we cleaned the air rather than only relying on individual behaviour.

🧵 Psych thoughts re: the Seine: This was obviously a policy failure that we watched unfold in real time. ("Wait! Stop! Come back!" says Willie Wonka.) But it also demonstrates how people selectively trust authority figures when those leaders are... 1/14 cnn.com/2024/08/04/sport/bel…

Of course I'm living in fear. With global leaders ignoring a pandemic for 4 years, genocide, climate change, the steady descent into fascism. I'm living in fear of those who *aren't* living in fear. We need a total uprising

This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I love it. This is how you folks sound, you sound ridiculous. I know you don't think you do, but you do. #CovidIsNotOver

THIS. School closures weren’t unnecessary or an overreaction. The problem is that decision-makers failed to implement the measures needed to make schools safer for children to return to an in-person learning environment.

Here's the thing about school closures everyone forgets. Scientists fully expected decisionmakers to use the 1st lockdown to put in place MEASURES ato allow safe and permanent school opening. We were aghast when they failed to do so. Blame appropriately. cbsnews.com/news/fauci-schoo…

This is an absolutely incredible, must-watch, all-timer of a clip. The Secretary of State admits social media has made it almost impossible to hide atrocities and a sitting senator agrees by saying outloud that was a factor in leveraging the power of the state against TikTok.
“Why has the PR been so awful?… typically the Israelis are good at PR—what’s happened here, how have they and we been so ineffective at communicating the realities and our POV?… some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down potentially TikTok.”

i love this framing! the skill that most distinguishes a novice/ineffective engineering manager from an experienced, effective engineering manager, IMO, is the ability to right-size your team's workload by saying no to the right things.
1. All engineering teams need some "slack time" (not the chatting app) 2. All engineering teams should be slightly understaffed and perennially non-empty list of things to do The biggest Engineering Management learning is to reconcile these two truths of work.

The CNCF TOC is so strange. It's 11 members that get appointed to hotly contested seats through a series of elections, then it takes over a year to close out a vote on a single proposal and 3/11 people can't even be bothered to vote. github.com/cncf/toc/pull/956
