Two wild elephants, including a calf, were electrocuted after becoming entangled in an illegally rigged electric fence erected around a cultivation land in the Jothiamuna area of Maligawila, Okkampitiya. According to Lankadeepa, the elephants were killed instantly after coming into contact with the live wire, which had been set up to protect a plantation cultivated with sugarcane, papaya, banana and paddy crops from wild animals. The dead elephants have been identified as a 20-year-old adult elephant, measuring about six feet in height, and an elephant calf aged around one year, measuring approximately four feet tall. Wildlife officers have arrested an individual who had been looking after the property, while the owner of the land where the electric fence had been installed has reportedly fled the area and gone into hiding. Wildlife officials, together with the Okkampitiya Police, are conducting investigations and taking steps to apprehend the landowner. (NewsWire)

The government intends to allocate around Rs. 2,000 billion for capital expenditure in the upcoming year, Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said. He said the government has also allocated approximately Rs. 1,350 billion for capital expenditure this year. The Minister made these remarks while attending the inauguration ceremony for the development of 14 carpeted roads in the Kalutara District on Saturday (13) under the Integrated Road Investment Program (iRoad), the governmentโ€™s main rural and regional road development initiative. Jayatissa said the programme to develop 14 rural roads in Kalutara is being implemented with funding support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Sri Lankan government. He also noted that projects worth Rs. 550 million have been approved this year for the development of rural roads in the district under both provincial council and central government funding. In addition, Rs. 100 million has been allocated for the development of bridges and culverts in Kalutara, while around Rs. 2 billion has been set aside overall for road and related infrastructure development in the district. The Minister further stated that state revenue had increased significantly in 2025 and 2026, adding that government revenue stood at Rs. 5,500 billion in the previous year. He also said the country recorded its highest-ever export earnings last year, while foreign remittances have increased and the tourism sector continues to show improvement. (NewsWire)

A small thought experiment: You and EIon Mosk go for lunch together for the 2nd time. Same place as last time, same cost. Last time he paid the bill ($100). Will you insist to pay this time? (I think you should). Assume your economic situation didnโ€™t change from your reality.
