To be fair, it's a communism versus capitalism thing. Russia faces the same perception issues. People forget benefit of doubt when communism enters the chat--for good reason, I might add.
In this situation, I'm sure the feedback is overwhelming negative. The US is handling this terribly, especially considering how much foreign nationals have impacted the ecosystem. He doesn't have the greatest advisory in his circle, people who are actually in the field and who understand what the ramifications are of orders like this, who can nudge him in the better direction.
Hopefully this is overturned.

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Claude models is not affected.

They can't do this.
They have relied heavily on US' goodwill to get to where they are right now. The US government using them for war alone is such a huge vote of confidence for other companies to bank on them.
Leaving the US will strangulate then more than it frees them.

Then Google starts to slack off because of the lack of apparent competition.

Sometimes, you'll remember your experiences working in corporate Big Tech and just start laughing.
I remember after being laid off at Microsoft, I remembered I was in great talking terms with my manager's boss, so I reached out to him on WhatsApp you know like, "...in case you see another opening, do let me know...I can contribute in x, y, z".
He was a GM. Big boy na, so I was expectant. He went, "for sure Johnmark, sorry about that, I'll be on the look out"
It was a few weeks later I realized both he and his boss who was a VP were also laid off. π
