#ThreatenedSpeciesThursday: The pretty pink and white flowerheads of the #SnowballProtea (𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘢) are not easily seen, since the plants are confined to peaks above 1 700m & only grow in 7 isolated subpopulations in the #Cederberg.

I just returned home from a wonderful few weeks spent in New Zealand, where I attended the International Sap Flow Workshop, and Tasmania, where I deployed sap flow sensors with Tim Brodribb and Ibrahim Bourbia.
📢 Job announcement: fully funded postdoc position! Are you looking to do exciting research in beautiful South Africa? We are looking for a motivated postdoc with skills in plant ecology and physiology to work on improving our knowledge of the evolutionary ecophysiology of shrubs
The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB), an invasive beetle from Asia, is causing widespread damage to trees across the globe.
Prevent its spread by choosing eco-friendly alternatives. Learn more by visiting our website: zurl.co/7yFT#PSHB#InvasiveSpecies
Update on the sap flow workshop in Rotorua, NZ. The workshop (themed sap flow in a diverse and changing world) is accepting late abstract submissions. Submit yours today to avoid missing out.
The deadline for abstract submission for the international sap flow workshop in Rotorua has been extended by 2 weeks to Friday 7 July 2023. Come to New Zealand!

New paper on plant form and function out in @PlantCellEnvir: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…. @jvwilkening et al. developed a neat model to examine how patterns of variation in vulnerability segmentation, hydraulic segmentation and the interaction between them influences plant function.
It makes for a fascinating read and should go some way to stimulate discussion in plant hydraulics. Well done @jvwilkening and all the co-authors for making it happen and bringing it to fruition.
Fun to share our new paper out in @PlantCellEnvir today where myself, @skelrob, Xue Feng, Todd Dawson, and @DrSallyET used plant hydraulic modeling to test some hypotheses regarding vulnerability segmentation and its role in plant drought response doi.org/10.1111/pce.14649 (🧵👇)
This study reveals variable vulnerability segmentation between stems and leaves. Conventional and reverse patterns observed, impacting conductance.
Implications for plant traits and hydraulic segmentation.
