This week proved highways donโ€™t belong in the heart of cities. One option: Louisville should explore removing I-65 inside the Watterson and I-64 along the waterfront, paired with new West Louisville bridges to unlock growth and reconnect neighborhoods.

Huge problem in Louisville: Here's 5 vacant lots next to 5 decent sized homes. But it's illegal to build those same sized homes today because if arbitrary government regulations (made up lot size & set backs)
In older American cities, arbitrary zoning rules like minimum lot size regulations often make it illegal to redeveloping existing vacant lots and build naturally affordable housing in closer-in neighborhoods. Akron is wising up and eliminating these mandates.

A new report finds it would cost U.S. cities $4.6 trillion over 20 years to build world-class transit systems. That sounds steep until you compare it to the $6.3 trillion already allocated to highways during the same period. theguardian.com/environment/โ€ฆ

If someone owns land, they should have broad freedom to build whatever they believe there is demand for, whether housing, shops, offices, or something else, unless there is a genuine safety reason to say no.
