This post resonates so much rn. After a year or so off from education. Stepping back into the classroom - I’m so conscious of the privilege it is to work with young people. Those 💡moments are the best!
"That kind of community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when school leaders are intentional about inviting others in, sharing ownership, and building a culture rooted in respect and belonging." Dr. Rachel Edoho-Eket, #ForwardTogether Forever Their Teacher - mailchi.mp/georgecouros/forw…

Anyone want to chime in on this graphic that is intended to show how one might "learn" math on your own? Think about mathy people wandering around the world before (much) formal education existed..... @ProfSmudge @watanabeKSU @pippinsboss @kennedy_tierney @dmarain @SmartJacques

Math. A mathematician emerges from a cave, hands you the the slip of paper below, and says "Is it true that a dart thrown at the real number line would never hit a rational number?" What is your response?

Do you know why a negative divided by a positive equals a negative? If not, find out in 30 seconds.

Absolutely fascinating thread. Thanks @C_Hendrick The world of pedagogy is full of false dichotomies, no absolutes and it’s beautifully confusing!!! Probably the reason I love it.. you are never done knowing how to teach!
A thread summarising my talk at #rED23 yesterday on the challenges of applying the science of learning in the classroom 🧵

As far back as the 1890s William James cautioned against thinking you can apply the principles of psychology straight into the classroom. However, without an understanding of how the brain learns, planning instruction is suboptimal. I think these two positions encapsulate the interstitial point in which we find ourselves.

Absolutely love this blog post.. I think #1 is so common amongst Maths teachers as so much teaching of Maths used to be mimicking and not thinking! You’re so right that we tend to see all the shiny stuff on social media. Thank you for sharing @robertkaplinsky
A big problem in education is that teachers keep their insecurities to themselves for fear of being judged. I wish it wasn't that way. So, I wrote a list of my 10 biggest educator insecurities and hope it'll make it easier to talk about. robertkaplinsky.com/ten-thin… #iteachmath

Start by asking for a definitely wrong answer. Kids love coming up with nonsense answers and it sometimes helps with buy-in to the actual problem. Kids who struggle in math are so used to getting wrong answers sometimes starting with this helps them relax.

Did you know? 🤔 When 9th-grade students wrestled with math problems to find their own solutions before receiving instruction, their comprehension nearly doubled, compared to students learning via direct instruction only. Read the study: bit.ly/3S8b144
