Thank you, @RepDianaDeGette, for your leadership and for speaking out! Access to counsel is a critical safeguard for unaccompanied children, protecting them from trafficking, exploitation, and abuse while ensuring they can participate in their immigration proceedings.
Federal agents showed up unannounced at children’s legal aid organizations this week with no warrant and one clear purpose: intimidation. It is no coincidence this happened the same week that Trump and his GOP allies handed ICE and CBP an additional $70 billion payout. These nonprofit organizations help kids prepare for court, stay safe from trafficking, and navigate a system designed for adults. They are not threats. They are a lifeline, and their young clients are often under the direct care of HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). ORR has the responsibility for the care and placement of unaccompanied children in federal custody. Secretary Kennedy has a lot to answer for, and as the Ranking Member of the Health Subcommittee, I want answers immediately. washingtonpost.com/politics/…

Legal services are a child protection tool. Attorneys help unaccompanied children understand their rights, appear in court, & access protections available under the law As KIND’s Wendy Young told The Washington Post: “We are really part of the solution.” wapo.st/3Qczyq9

Thank you, @RepSalinas, for demanding answers about the prolonged detention of unaccompanied children. Children belong in safe, supportive settings—not detained indefinitely. We support continued oversight to ensure every child is treated lawfully & placed in appropriate care.
Unaccompanied children's detention has devastating consequences — we must end indefinite detention now‼️ I led a letter with 46 of my colleagues to Secretary Kennedy and Office of Refugee Resettlement Acting Director Salazar, demanding answers about prolonged detention. Children should not spend months—or years—in limbo. Two Honduran siblings have remained in federal custody for nearly a year despite having family sponsors available to receive them. Prolonged uncertainty can harm children’s well-being & sense of safety. abcnews.com/US/2-honduran-ch…

🚨JUST IN: Congress is urging action as the administration refuses to issue payments for legally required services for unaccompanied children. These nonpayments threaten a system that has protected kids for nearly 20 years, and put thousands at risk. 🔗supportkind.org/press-releas…

Children in prolonged ORR custody often experience worsening stress, anxiety, and withdrawal. Our new practice guidance helps attorneys, advocates, clinicians, and service providers recognize and respond to what many describe as "detention fatigue." bit.ly/4dGj6HA

The ATJ iniative is a critical investment for the wellbeing of children seeking safety. Justice shouldn’t depend on whether a child can access a lawyer. ATJ ensures due process & real opportunity. We urge @councilofdc to prioritize FY27 ATJ funding. #DCCivilJustice #ATJFunding

40 deported parents interviewed in Honduras. 24 left children behind in the U.S. Most were never asked if they were a parent. 15 kids were under 5. Congress must pass family protection law, not leave families relying on loophole filled policies. bit.ly/4u1eHnm

The Access to Justice Initiative is one of DC’s most effective investments. It helps keep children in school, families stable, and futures on track by expanding access to legal representation. We urge @councilofdc to prioritize FY27 ATJ funding. #DCCivilJustice #ATJFunding
