The GWOT Memorial should be a 24/7, 365 days a year KBR DFAC run by Filipino and Pakistani indentured servants and serving and endless supply of boiled eggs, ice cream, metrx, ripits, and piss bottles… I mean Gatorade.
Out front there should be a weapons clearing barrel for visiting JOs to shoot into, and a handwashing station that nobody uses.
It should be surrounded by t-walls and feature maximum dust production (mud if it rains), and have an open burn pit slightly upwind.
Over the entrance, a single solemn sentence, “They will greet us as liberators.”
It should cost a trillion dollars.

Looking at the new GWOT memorial I feel ambivalence. Which, I guess is an appropriate way to memorialize how the Congress and public approached the GWOT. Still though, every other monument is truly moving - weird looking at my own and feeling nothing

- rules (don’t walk in the water!) mean you can’t get to the other side (victory)
- the structure doesn’t make any sense, but has taken on a life of its own
- minimal shade
- requires lots of contractors to maintain
- lots of people will go ther and sit around

It's planned on what are now athletic fields at the corner of Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue, near the Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

I’m a GWOT Veteran. I’ve been really excited about the memorial in DC. The guys I served with there and the people we lost deserve it.
Having said that, what am I looking at here?
If I were a civilian walking around DC, I’m not sure what is presented here would make me think about the longest war in American History.
