AP exams are coming soon! Now is a good time to pull out those FRQs for your Pre-AP classes. These questions were inspired by the 2024 AP Calculus exams. Also, check out the Alg 1 and Alg 2 versions 🙂 teacherspayteachers.com/Prod… #iTeachMath

COVID’s no longer a reason as much as a convenient excuse for where we are in education. In truth, it was probably never really a reason as much as a revelation. It didn’t upend education. It exposed education. And we were long without clothes before COVID joined the parade.

I used to enjoy the NFL. Now it is like fake "reality TV" where those generating the biggest $$$ make a bunch of elite billionaires even richer. They don't care too much about the fans or the athletes except for $$$. The rigged games are the final straw #boycottsuperbowl

I like CO Buffs, I was rooting for them, and, in the end, the missed calls probably didn't matter, but those flagrant face mask "no calls" (against buffs) were telling ...and I am seeing way more of those this season .. perhaps Vegas has infiltrated college sports

The lack of identifiable purpose and meaning is literally destroying our kids…and it is long past time we as educators made this our number one priority

Today I had students in Algebra do a "Brain Dump" on data in groups. Gave each group a poster and ask them to put as much as they could on the posters. Then did a gallery walk. It went AMAZING! Gotta add this routine more often. #iteachmath

It is true, but it isn't empowering. I go much further. I am brutally honest with kids about school and how it impacts them moving forward. Here are some of the truths I dared to share with kids. Do you agree? What would you add? 1. You are right. It is very unlikely that will ever use any of this when you leave school. All of these (seemingly meaningless) tasks are designed to measure your willingness to do them and attach a number (grades, rank, etc) to sort you into categories during and after school. 2. This test was created to deny access to certain groups. You are likely to be denied access if you fail. Don't let them do that to you. You can game their system. I will gladly help you game their system. You don't have to fail. Never believe the lie that you are doomed to fail. 3. It is not fair. Life is not fair. You have to do more, work harder and do it better than many other more privileged people to gain success, but that is okay because you are capable of doing more and you have me to help get you there. 4. Many people expect you to quit. Some even hope you quit so they can maintain their own systems that enable them to enjoy success with little effort. Make them sweat to beat you. Never go down without a fight. #iteachmath #mtbos #edchat

My 8th grade earth science teacher told our class: "Not everyone is meant to be someone who changes the world, invents something new, or is a doctor." I remember it came in response to a classmate talking about wanting to be a president one day My teacher stopped the lesson and “tried to be real with us” (as he put it) that if we were sitting in a public school class we probably weren’t going to be the next change makers And I'm on the fence if this is good or bad advice On the one hand… he’s right - not everyone can and will be able to achieve those kinds of lofty goals (for a variety of reasons) On the other hand… I find that kind of advice very limiting and discouraging - why not push kids to go after crazy ambitious goals? Perhaps a balance is needed where kids are realistic of their limitations but are pushed to be ambitious and driven What are your thoughts?
