Reliable wind-and-solar-based electricity systems need to be designed taking more years of weather data into account than is now common practice, because weather is quite variable even at continental scale. Paper: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… Research Brief: climateenergylab.org/researc…

It is easy to read about the immense diameters of #offshorewind turbines without appreciating their true scale. En route from Providence to NYC, I saw these beauties waiting to ship out of New London, CT. Wow! #EnergyTourism, @oceanticnetwork, #windpower, #EnergyTransition

This is an excellent group asking big questions at the intersection of #Economic #development and #climate I was privileged to join @KenCaldeira and team as I transitioned from studying particle physics to low-carbon energy systems I highly recommend these positions to others
Are you looking for a position as a postdoctoral research scientist and thinking about how we could provide better information and tools to make decisions at the intersection of economic development and climate goals? jobs.carnegiescience.edu/job…

Ever heard about wind droughts – prolonged period of low wind power generation? In a new paper, we identify global patterns of wind droughts, their frequency, and places that instead have highly reliable winds. 🧵👇 nature.com/articles/s43247-0…

Where is wind power the most abundant and most reliable? Was the European wind drought of 2021 due to climate change or are winds in Northern Europe just that variable? A new paper by Enrico Antonini and colleagues has the answers. nature.com/articles/s43247-0… @CarnegieScience

Ancillary Services Question for #energytwitter: Are there public resources showing how often different AS have been deployed in different ISOs? Specifically, I want to compare the rate of deployed vs. just clearing the market. Thanks!

The 5th National Climate Assessment was released last week. I had the pleasure to develop the "#hydrogen box", which presents challenges and opportunities for H2 to aid in decarbonizing, along with @Davis_StevenJ, Ryan Jones, and the rest of the authors. nca2023.globalchange.gov/cha…

The figure show #hydrogen production, energy losses, and uses now and a possible illustrative 2050 scenario. The 2050 scenario is adapted from the Annual Decarbonization Perspective (ADP) 2022 illustrating H2's possible role in the #EnergyTransition evolved.energy/post/adp2022

H2 IRA Question on stacking incentives: I understand I have to choose PTC for H2 or ITC for the electrolysis facility. Can I claim the H2 PTC then have an "energy storage" H2-to-power facility with H2 storage and fuel cells claiming that ITC? @JesseJenkins #EnergyTwitter

Congratulations @MshzdJaved! New paper exploring inter-annual weather variability & sizing & operating micro grid systems As more data is included in original optimization: - increased reliability, and - energy storage, but always at a cost. Free link: authors.elsevier.com/c/1hMIl…

Exciting! Our paper is online. We assessed multi-annual variability impact on small-scale decentralized renewable energy systems’ sizing and operation. Joint work with @thruggles , @jurasz_jakub , and others. Link: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

This correlation between heatwaves, electric load, and solar availability is critical. @KenCaldeira and I showed solar power in summer peaking systems like #ERCOT can also reduce the inter-annual variability of the peak net (residual) load: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
No peak demand record today but we broke a better record in #ERCOT w/ 31.5GW of wind & solar! As @maxk points out, every megawatt helps during these heat waves, esp. w/ 9.6 GW of gas & coal plants offlne. (ERCOT defines 8.3GW as "high outages"). #txlege #energytwitter #txenergy

The strong correlation between the hours with the greatest electric load and solar availability provides benefits of making the residual (net) load more predictable.
