‼️According to new research released @nuclearban, in 2025, the nine nuclear-armed states spent $16.8 billion (19%) more on their nuclear arsenals than the year before, a total of $119 billion, or $3,768 per second on nuclear weapons. More here: icanw.org/2025_nuclear_weapo… #NuclearBan

Dr. Omar Ammar, a gyno-oncologist, was detained March 3, 2024, while passing through tanks in his hometown. He remains in custody without charges or trial and has not had legal representation at any of his hearings. During a conversation with him, Dr. Ammar mentioned that he was held in a cell with 10 people – each had a mattress but there were only 6 beds, meaning 4 people would sleep on thin mattresses on the floor. Dr. Omar Ammar is among dozens of healthcare workers from #Gaza who are being unlawfully detained by Israel and subjected to inhumane conditions and ongoing medical neglect. It is our responsibility to demand their immediate release. Use of the photo is made in accordance with Section 27A of the Copyright Law. #ReleaseThe14Doctors

Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write. This is the article: volkskrant.nl/kijkverder/v/2…

An IAEA team has inspected the impact of this morning’s drone strike on the central spent fuel storage facility near the Chornobyl site, reporting that it caused significant structural damage to part of the fuel reception building, including to the IAEA safeguards office located there. The team of experts observed damage to the building’s facade, walls and staircase, with shattered glass shards, broken bricks and other debris seen scattered on the ground. They confirmed that radiation levels at the facility remained normal, indicating that the incident did not cause any radioactive contamination. They were also informed that spent fuel was stored in casks a few hundred metres from the damaged building at the time of the attack, while other closer ones had been empty. It remains unclear when the facility will be able to start receiving spent fuel from Ukraine’s operating NPPs again. DG @rafaelmgrossi says it was an extremely concerning incident and a close call in terms of nuclear safety. Attacking a facility with large amounts of nuclear material is like playing with fire and it must never happen, DG Grossi says, adding that the IAEA will continue to investigate the incident.

Systematic violence and human rights violations are not exceptions to Israel's apartheid regime and occupation, they are integral to it. Israel is using unbridled violence in all the territories under its control, as well as in Lebanon and Iran. Since October 2023, this policy has escalated: In Gaza: tens of thousands of Palestinians killed, millions forcibly displaced, entire neighborhoods and infrastructure systematically destroyed In the West Bank: about 1,082 Palestinians killed, including 239 children and teenagers; 61 communities with at least 4,161 members forcibly displaced and another 15 partially so, with at least 454 members displaced In Israeli prisons: thousands of Palestinians subjected to systemic torture, violence and humiliation, in inhumane conditions Under Israel's apartheid regime, Palestinian lives are treated as expendable and millions across the Middle East are at risk.

Last week, after two and a half years of ongoing delay by both the state and Israel’s Supreme Court, the High Court of Justice accepted the joint petition we filed, led by the @acrionline and joined by Physicians for Human Rights Israel, @HaMokedRights and @Gisha_Access . The Court ordered the Israeli prison authorities to grant the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) full access to detainees and prisoners, access to information regarding them, and access to detention facilities, including private meetings with the detainees themselves. We welcome this important decision, even though it comes after an unacceptable delay. Visits by the ICRC to places of detention are essential, and preventing them constitutes an ongoing violation that should have ended long ago. Such visits are critical not only for ensuring independent and reliable monitoring, but also for preventing torture, abuse, and life-threatening medical neglect. Under the Geneva Conventions, the @ICRC has a legal mandate to visit prisoners of war and other detainees in order to assess detention conditions and ensure humane treatment. Today, more than 9,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli detention facilities. Approximately half of them are held without charge and without fair legal proceedings. As we have repeatedly documented, thousands of these detainees are being held under horrific conditions characterized by systematic torture, starvation, and denial of medical care as a matter of declared policy. The denial of ICRC access has contributed to an environment in which widespread and systematic abuse and mistreatment have flourished. We call on the Israeli authorities to implement the Court’s ruling promptly and without further delay.

US$119 billion! That's the shocking amount 9 states spent on their nuclear weapons last year. Imagine what good things could have been done with this much money, sunk into weapons that must never be used and jeopardise everyone. app.sosha.ai/s/fpFkMRvD #nuclearban

Why oh why those with the power to hold Israel authorities accountable for their cruelty failing over and over? "large amounts of nuclear material ... meters away from the attacked building" No other energy source faces these kinds of catastrophic risks.
The IAEA has been informed by Ukraine of a drone attack early this morning on the central spent fuel storage facility located in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. The strike caused significant damage to the facility’s fuel reception building - including to the facade, windows and doors - and nearby buildings were also affected by the blast wave. Radiation levels at the facility remain within established limits, Ukraine says. The IAEA team at the Chornobyl site will soon visit the facility to inspect the impact. DG @rafaelmgrossi says the incident is deeply concerning as it occurred at a facility containing large amounts of nuclear material, held in storage just metres away from the attacked building. Attacks on nuclear sites are completely unacceptable and in direct contravention of key nuclear safety principles, notably the 7 Indispensable Pillars for nuclear safety and security during a military conflict, DG Grossi says.

The experiment is over – we know what does and doesn’t work to address climate If we look at what has been proposed to address global warming, air pollution, and energy security during the past 25 years, only one solution – electrification of all energy sectors and generation of the electricity with wind, solar, geothermal, and hydro sources -- has made an impact. This solution has reduced enough world emissions and technology costs for the @IPCC_CH, to eliminate its worst-case climate scenario. What are the proposed climate solutions that never worked? (1) Fossil gas replacing coal, (2) ethanol replacing gasoline, (3) carbon capture, (4) direct removal of CO2 from the air by equipment, (5) blue hydrogen, 6) nuclear, and (7) geoengineering. We knew these were poor solutions back in 2009, when they were first evaluated. But, it has taken 17 years to overcome lobbyists pushing these techs. On the other hand, electrification of world transport, buildings, and industry and using clean renewables to provide the electricity while growing energy efficiency, also proposed in 2009, has worked, as evidenced by the world growth in electric vehicles, heat pumps, electric furnaces, and clean, renewable electricity generators. All-of-the-above policies, or let’s try everything and hope something works policies, have failed. Given the short time we have, we should never see another IPCC scenario that includes biofuels, carbon capture, direct air capture, nuclear, geoengineering or their derivatives, blue hydrogen, electo-fuels, or sustainable aviation fuels. We know what works. Let's focus on that going forward.
