This is the American that embodies our best values and ideals. Not the man in the White House. I am grateful that the world can see a very different side of the American people through his faithful witness.
BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV on Trump’s warning to Iran of ā€œcivilizationā€ destruction — ā€œThis is truly not acceptable. Here there are certainly questions of international law, but even more than this a question of morality for the good of people.ā€ He adds the war is ā€œcontinuing to escalate and is not resolving anything… is only provoking more hatred throughout the world.ā€ ā€œattacks on civilian infrastructure are against international law, but it is also against sign of the hatred and division that we are capable of.ā€ Video @Reuters

Keep him here. Sheltering heroic defectors from tyranny is kinda definitional to who we are.
ā€œIf he gets deported, he’s really dead." Guan Heng risked his life exposing China's Uyghur camps, taking on-the-ground videos that served as evidence for investigators around the world. Now, after fleeing to the US, he's been detained by ICE and is facing deportation to China.

In a moment like this, when tensions are high, part of the job of the president is to remind us of the ties that bind us together.

The powerful weapons used in modern wars threaten to lead us to a barbarism greater than that of the past. In the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those in positions of responsibility what Pope Francis used to say: 'War is always a defeat!' And with Pope Pius XII: 'Nothing is lost with peace. Everything can be lost with war.'

One of my least favorite things, genuinely, is seeing Trump hold court with a bunch of sycophants standing around him smiling and laughing at unfunny jokes.
Trump: "He made $2 and a half billion today and he made "900 million." Remember when MAGA Republicans were complaining about Pelosi's stock trading?

It's so hard to separate the quality of the presentation from the quality of the insight. But it's really, really important to do. Lots of bad ideas get put into very appealing packages.

Alexei Navalny was in the darkest pit. And yet he remained free. May his example of courage live for all time. God knows we need it in ours. thefp.com/p/alexei-navalny-l…

Truly stunning work by @mckaycoppins. I got chills reading the account of Jan 6 and Mitt’s enraged rebuke of Hawley, et al as they huddled in the senate chamber pre-evacuation. Regardless of politics, Mitt is a dying breed, and I believe we’re worse for it.
For two years, I met with Mitt Romney in his DC townhome as he grappled with what his party—and his country—were becoming. The stories he told me from inside the Senate were extraordinary and damning. ROMNEY: A RECKONING is out next month. First excerpt:Ā theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…

This is an excellent idea. Encourage vaccination through the carrot and not the stick, and you just might prevent or mitigate the coming vaccine culture war.
Pay everyone $1500 to get vaccine It is a stimulus check & big vaccine incentive rolled into one Result: more people get vaccine, it saves lives, helps people financially, and the $400 B pays for itself w/ economic boost from ending pandemic RT if you agree #vaccinestimulus

An article I wrote to examine if Roseanne and Samantha Bee’s comments were morally equivalent and if there was a double standard in the consequences they faced: timchaves.com/were-roseanne-…

I think if we'd come up with blockchain first, people would look at centralized servers and be like "holy crap, that's amazing!!"

3/Preventing evil people from DECIDING to take many lives is a long-term issue; for now we must prevent them from being able to decide that.

2/ I don't believe they intended any one person to have the god-like power to decide, en masse, who lives and dies.
