Where are we at with the intergovernmental UN Tax Process and what next?
Update: After 3 weeks of intense tax negotiations with all governments at the table, Terms of Reference for a #UNTaxConvention was adopted on 16 August 2024. Here is the final text: financing.desa.un.org/sites/…
“This is not about a lack of capacity.
The transfer pricing system does not work anywhere. It does not work for the Global North nor for the Global South.”
- Ryad Selmani (@ccfd_tsolidaire) in an intervention on #UNTaxConvention Workstream II, the first early protocol
As we look from FfD4 to the August UN Tax Convention negotiations, civil society highlighted:
Tax justice is essential for economic justice. It is key to deliver the resources for public services, development, human rights, gender equality, & climate action.

"In the #UNTaxConvention process what we are saying to Europe is we want a global agreement, we want you involved, and there are very good reasons for you to be involved in the negotiations." - @toveryding from @eurodad at the #FfD4 Side Event #FfD4People

"Countries are losing a lot of money because of corporate tax evasion; countries are giving up on taxing the wealthy. This is not a poor country problem, this is not a rich country problem, this is a global problem." 💬 @toveryding, Tax Justice.
Daniel Oberko from @PSIglobalunion (Africa & Arab Countries) argues that international tax reform is about funding public services like teachers, doctors and nurses. Unions need to be in the international tax reform space and make their demands clear. #UNTaxConvention
Luke Espiritu from @BMP_PH (Philippines) says that international taxation needs to be discussed at the United Nations, where Global South countries have a seat at the table. #UNTaxConvention#TaxJustice
Júneia Batista from @SINDSEP (Brazil) says that is important for the working class to be involved in international tax reform, because it affects workers' lives and the planet. #UNTaxConvention#TaxJustice
How about showing Kenya some support for its #FfD4 positions ?
They're asking for support for the UN Tax Convention and reform of the international financial architecture as a matter of urgency.
So far the UK is actively undermining progress on these.
The UK-Kenya partnership is driving growth and supporting regional security.
Alongside @MusaliaMudavadi I launched the UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership refresh and discussed how we can work together to push for an end to the fighting in Sudan.

Very clear message from the Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte B. Egede:
"We don't want to be Danes. We don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders."
Why are so many in Copenhagen, Brussels and Washington finding this so difficult to respect?

We have asked both institutions to:
◾ promptly disclose legislative documents even if this leads to external pressure
◾ refuse access only in truly exceptional circumstances
◾ inform third parties who submit documents during law-making that these may be disclosed
