this seems like a good day to remind my friends to use social media sparingly, if at all, and recommend that you volunteer as little personal information to the people who run these sites as you can. with love and concern from new jersey.

we go through this *every time* a band from nyc gets popular. we went through it with the strokes, and vw. now it's about geese. meanwhile, there exist 100s of great working/middle class emo & punk bands who are glossed over b/c they don't fit the narrative that rock is dead.
the “only rich kids make music nowadays” line of thinking comes from a place of good faith, like of course you’re primed to become a big star if you have wealth & family connections, but it rly only applies to the upper echelons. most of my friends are broke & still make music 🤷‍♀️

i won the new jersey press association award for criticism. my thanks to everybody i've written about. i've learned so much from you. it means a lot to win it for the @jerseycitytimes.
On this Local News Day, Tris McCall's award — the Jersey City Times' first — is just one of many reasons to celebrate. jcitytimes.com/how-im-celebr…

let me tell you a story. on friday, we will be reading *rafe*, a tale of a demon who wants to play the drums, in the theater at art house productions (345 marin blvd., jc). it's free! our storytelling will be augmented by songs, synth, projections, and (maybe) a few opinions.

currently obsessed with it. it's an album about the dangers of aggression and it's scarily salient to the world we're trapped in. out of ten, it's a 9.8 -- the missing 0.2 is because of the discordant parts of sound chaser. that track gets abrasive. everything else is perfect.
This is an early YES album that I always struggled to get into when it came out. I appreciate it now but still seldom play it. What do you rate this YES album out of 10? #mikesquestions #Prog #YES

Be honest. What album or song were you completely obsessed with in high school?

“Even the installations that venture beyond the walls of domestic space search for a midway point between troubled local history and half-remembered childhood memory.” Tris McCall (@trismccall) writes about Art Fair 14C for @JerseyCityTimes ow.ly/NgVV50VYy59

this may be the thing in the world i agree with the most.
Here's a piping hot Star Wars take for ya: The prequels should't have been about Vader at all. His backstory should have only been hinted at. His mystique made him cinema's most iconic villain overnight, and that was ruined when we learned about his childhood hobbies.

the 2024 pop music abstract is now live. forty thousand words on 150 '24 albums, written as fast as i can with no editing allowed. the object of the game is to try to write faster than i can think, and in so doing, figure out what it is i think. trismccall.net/pop-music-abs…

when i was a kid, i didn't think that anything could be cooler than writing for the star-ledger. now that i'm grown up, i still don't. i'm grateful to have had the opportunity. nj.com/news/2024/10/star-led…

major thematic similarities between @bcnrband live at bush hall and wish you were here. frontman down with crippling mental health issues & the rest of the band examining their complicity and guilt in a set of compassionate, beautiful songs about him. anyway. i love the album.

one score and zero years ago, we brought upon this earth a freaked-out, buzz-filled rock album called shootout at the sugar factory. on sept. 8, we celebrate the curious persistence of the shootout with a visually-enhanced synthesizer meltdown at @arthouseprods in jc. free show!

i am excited to be playing with office culture, creators of one of the most unusual albums of '22. an edward hopper exhibition in song, full of too-quiet interiors, late-nite phone calls, dangling conversations & diabolical riddles. lyrics that sting more each time you hear them.
Next Office Culture show will be a doozy - 6/29 at Berlin (in Manhattan) w the amazing @kolbworld and @trismccall
